I like the trade. I look at it this way - Tillman is an upgrade over Stevens!!
I think he's insurance for Q and Kornet. Let's see him play first, though.
Another move or two coming?
Let's go!!

Celtics secure insurance down low, trade for defensive-minded Memphis big man With just a day left until the trade deadline, the Boston Celtics acquired depth in the frontcourt via a forward/center from a Western Conference outfit. By Caden Charpentier |
What is really important to note is the fact that the forward/center possesses postseason experience. In fact, Tillman started in all six games in the first-round playoff series last year against the L.A. Lakers. In Memphis' Game 2 triumph, Tillman netted a team-high 22 points (10-13 from the field) in addition to snatching 13 rebounds, five of them on the offensive end. At 6-foot-8, Memphis' now ex-No. 2 is by no means limited to defending just bigs, showing an ability to match up against perimeter threats as well. He'll compete with Luke Kornet for minutes, strengthening Boston in the rebounding and rim protection department.
Offensively, he may not bring much outside the painted area. Some will be worried about his career 26 percent three-point percentage, but that won't be his job. We'll see Tillman be used in a lot of screen and rolls and flashes into the high post, something he thrives in given his high basketball IQ. Keep an eye on him in the short roll, especially with his confidence and the kind of unselfish guards Boston has. His offense has taken a dip this year, but hopefully a change a scenery helps to bring those percentages back up. Xavier Tillman brings grit, toughness, and athleticism off bench, providing vital depth in Boston Celtics' frontcourt
The versatile big man has not played so far this month due to a left knee injury that is not reported to be too serious. The logic is quite evident for Boston. With Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis on the injury report more often than Boston would like, Tillman provides that insurance policy. Not only is he someone for the rest of the regular season, the ex-Spartan can serve a role in the postseason if needed. His strength and high motor on the defensive end may come in handy against Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
As someone who knows when to make that extra pass, Tillman will fit right into this green and white army. This may have been what Stevens was hinting at as the "big wing" he was talking about. Though, that's not exactly his position, the versatility of the 2019 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year allows Mazzulla to play small much more often if he chooses.

I think that while he'll compete for minutes vs Kornet - depending on matchups or when Mazz wants to play smallball - he'll be the primary relief for Porzingis and Horford for the remainder of the regular season. He's played for the Grizz 3 1/2 seasons in 240+ games as well as playoffs. Don't be surprised to see him become your #2 or #3 Big on the roster. Kornet & Queta may end up as insurance for Tillman!

If we can't land Bey, I'd like to add Jordan Nwora to the list of potential wings - he's 6'8" SF recently traded to TOR from IND and can be had under the TPE with a contract of $3MM this season.

Nwora is a solid option for sure, especially is Brad is not looking to send out much in draft capital back.
it would not surprise me at all if Stevens tried to find someone that fits into that Grant TPE but also has an additional year on their contract. not sure who that could be, but in that case he might offer up one of our future first round picks even for the right guy.
Detroit needs to make a move after the trade with Minny last night, they have 16 players right now. Perhaps brad could see if they would be willing to flip T. Brown for a second?
he makes $4M this year and team option for $4M next season. Think of him as a L. Walker type player

I am fine with Tillman, but certainly do not see him eating minutes from Kornet. Maybe Q. but I do find him a better option than Stevens was, if looking to reduce minutes for Tatum, Porzingus and Horford. he can play very good defense, is not a liability on offense, and has playoff experience. there really is no downside, especially if some of the starters get additional rest. my assumption is adding other players will be difficult, as I prefer to not move any of the current bench players nor draft picks yes, I see the TPE is still available

I came up with various wing players who fit under the Grant TPE AND are under team control for more than this season.
some may not be available and other may be of no interest to the Celtics, but I put it together while we wait for the deadline to pass.
Atl- G. Matthews 2.0M +2.2M TO
Dal- S. Curry 4.0M + 4.0M TO Dal- D. Exum 3.0M +3.15M TO
Det- T. Brown 4.0M + 4.0M
LAC- A. Coffey 3.66M + 3.93M
Mem-J. Konchar 2.4M + 3years at 6.1M
Minn- N. Alexander- Walker 4.7M + 4.3M
NY- Q. Grime 2.4M + 4.3M
OKC- A. Wiggins 1.8M + 1.98M TO
Sac- C. Duarte 4.1M + 5.9M
SA- J. Champagnie 3.0M + 3 years at 3.0M TO
Tor- J. McDaniels 4.5M + 4.7M
Utah- O. Agbaji 4.1M + 4.3M + 6.4M TO
Wash- C. Kispert 3.7M + 5.7M
as I said some may not be on the trade block today and some would require a first round pick to get also.

Just read we are probably done!
Jake Fischer: Barring a surprise, sounds like Boston is done making moves before today’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline. League personnel are still waiting to see what defensive upgrade(s) come for Milwaukee, after the Bucks may have cast the widest net of any buyer in the NBA these past few weeks. – via Twitter JakeLFischer Trade, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks

Im with Admin and Ky. Tillman immediately slides into large role, leapfrogging every PF/C not named Tatum, Porzingis or Horford. Unless you include Hauser as a PF. IN that case, he'll prob leapfrog Hauser if they get Bey, but not if they dont.
Rotation as it stands:
White Jrue Brown Tatum Porzingis
Al Hauser Pritchard Tillman Kornet (sparingly)
