There has to be guys like Theis getting $9M that are on teams under the cap that don't need to match contracts. $TPE and a future 1st or a 2nd or two can get it done. I don't think the matching contracts for over the apron teams goes in effect until next season but I could be wrong.

All teams over salary cap (which we are) have to match contracts when trading for a player with either a player, a combination of players, or a single exception. But we cannot combine exceptions (including TPEs) with other exceptions or players.
As it is now, over-the-cap teams have a 15% buffer. So over-the-cap team x is trading for Theis (making 9.1M), they only have to send out 85% of 9.1m (7.75m). Starting after this year, teams over a new second apron (182m payroll) lose their buffer. So theyd have to send out 9.1M (or more). Another biggie:
Starting after this year, teams over second apron cant aggregate (combine) contracts for matching. So it would have to be ONE player making 9.1M or more you are sending assuming over second apron. You can add other players but one player must make at least 9.1 for the salary match (because starting next year cant combine for matching if over second apron). But correct, this is next year talk.
So it boils down to this...this is the LAST year we'd be able to do something like this w a payroll over 182M, which ours is.
Use TPE to acquire useless player making 6.5M (the amount of the TPE). This player will sit on the bench for 60 days. 60 days later you can combine it with other player contracts for salary matching purposes (because you are now combining the contracts of 2 players which you can do vs a TPE w anothr player which you cant do). So if you want Theis, you have to get to 7.75M. So package that player whom we received and has sat for 60 days w anyone making 1.25M and maybe a second, and you can get Theis. You wouldnt be able to do this at all next year. And even this year, you still have to turn the TPE into a player and wait 60 days before you can combine it w another contract for salary matchin purposes.
side note: Essentially the new rules are to prevent teams way way over the cap (over this new second apron) from getting more high paid players by combining a ton of small contracts for matching and then just backfilling w players who have been bought out.

Why do that when you can trade the TPE pickup with some draft picks for an upgrade? I don't believe the matching contract penalty for over the 2nd apron goes into effect until next season. Because there are better players available in the 9-12M salary range. If you trade just picks, you are limited to a guy making 6.5M or less (Grant TPE). If you use the 6.5M exception today and get a 6.5M scrub who is completely unplayable..... In 60 days you can combine that scrub with other salaries (Kornet, Pritch, whomever) and get player(s) making more (picks would still go in this deal). Pretty much you are increasing the luxury tax bill to expand the universe of whom you could acquire. You are correct that the matching penalties go into effect next year, where you cant aggregate at all if over the second apron. Assuming over second apron, this is the last year you can do something like this. Pick up a scrub just to hold him and wait out the 60 days so you can combine his salary w others for matching. that was my main point about matching Grant. The quality of possible players is better typically in the 10-12M range than ins the $6M range. but your point about picking up someone using the $6M TPE, then flipping them with another salary for a bigger fish is a good option for the reality we do live in now. there is still the issue of will the Owners pay the additional salary and taxes then. They obviously did not want to with Grant.

“Honestly, I didn’t understand how special of a place Boston was until I got here,” Tatum said. “I didn’t like Boston. I felt like them beating the Rams ended being the reason the Rams ended up leaving. They beat Kobe in ‘08, so I was sick about that. But this is a special place. They love their sports teams, they love their guys. I feel like they’ve been embraced, I feel like they’ve accepted me as one of their guys. There’s a sense of pride, there’s an edge you have to have to play here. I can only imagine the love, the reception, if you hung one of those banners up. It would be incredible — it’s going to be incredible. I know it.”

www.yardbarker.com/nba/articles/boston_celtics_linked_to_three_intriguing_trade_targets/s1_17149_39633095they list A. Drummond-Chic (3.36M) expiring C. Osman-SA (6.71M) expiring A. Caruso-Chic (9.46M and 9.89M) of those players ONLY Drummond fits into the Grant TPE of $6.2M. The other would require some type of player salary matching and as such are not really options, IMO. there was another story I saw the other day (that I cannot find now) that listed only big men options to add and those were Drummond P.Achiuwa -Tor Blake resigning Q-tip added to the main roster D. Saric -GS Blake and Q-tip cost nothing in trade assets, while the other three all fall under the Grant TPE but would cost in that case various type of draft capital for each one.

I seen that. Utah attendance is down.? 20 games left. Thomas signs a 10 day contract? His career was over long ago and he's broke . Best case . Retire and get his pension.. No NBA team is picking Thomas up next year. He isn't welcome in China if he was he could pull down a mil there.

I offended the Midget so many times i don't recall what i said. Here was the deal. Boston wanted him to undergo surgery .. If he had a contract would have been forthcoming . He refused and cost himself millions.

IT is flat broke.
The Celtics will vote to give him a ring if they win the championship is my guess.
So, when a player puts a championship ring on auction, it goes for hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.
It's for the money.

If we can't/won't add him to the current roster, a ring (if we get it) would be a terrific gesture of thanks for all he contributed to the rebuild.

What?
We regularly get 200-300 guests per day. Seems you guys posts are interesting enough to get a following but not controversial enough to elicit responses from the lurkers.
The new members have come from that increae in volume but in all cases have joined to post spam which is deleted by the mods and resulted in instant banning.
Maybe you guys need to be more combative or less tolerant of each other when debating issues ... (tongue in cheek).
