DAYUM, now we're in talks with Dennis Schroder....
Clippers To Re-Sign Reggie Jackson To Two-Year Deal by Luke Adams
Free agent point guard Reggie Jackson intends to sign a two-year, $22MM deal to return to the Clippers, agents Aaron Mintz and Erika Ruiz tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
That figure (which will actually come in around $21.6MM) is the maximum the capped-out Clippers can pay Jackson ...
Celtics Holding Discussions With Dennis Schröder by Dana Gauruder
The Celtics are holding negotiations with Lakers free agent guard Dennis Schröder, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report tweets.
Boston has been shopping for a point guard since trading Kemba Walker to Oklahoma City in a salary dump. It’s likely that the Celtics would dangle their mid-level exception to Schröder, whose value declined after a subpar postseason performance against Phoenix. Boston could theoretically pursue a sign-and-trade with the Lakers, but there would be a number of hurdles to clear to make that type of transaction.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, confirming the Celtics’ interest in Schröder, hears that the team could offer a one-year deal or a two-year deal with a player option.
Schröder’s foray into free agency has been a disappointment. He reportedly turned down a four-year, $84MM extension offer from the Lakers and bet on himself that he’d receive on the open market.
The door closed on a return to Los Angeles when the team agreed to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Wizards. Other clubs have not made an offer near what Schröder had hoped. The Knicks thought about signing Schröder but were lukewarm about that prospect even before they agreed to sign Walker (once he clears waivers) on a two-year deal in the $8-9MM annual range, according to Marc Stein of Substack.
If he fails to reach an agreement with Boston, it’s possible that Schröder could look to return to one of his former teams. according to Stein. The Thunder could give him a one-year contract above the $9.536MM mid-level exception that most teams can offer, though it’s unknown whether OKC would be interested in signing him.
Oklahoma City could use Schröder as a trade chip, while he could try to pump up his value and re-enter the market again next summer.

Anyone excited about Dennis Schroeder? not me. Thought Anderson or Jackson would have been cheaper better options. You? And why so many PGs? Makes me think they didnt like what they saw so far in Yam. Maybe too inexperienced.

How much can we offer him? Did we use a portion of the MLE on Kanter?

They can use the NT-MLE to sign him as a FA otherwise a S&T let's them go up to the hard cap $146MM.
The only reason they are reluctant to become hard capped is if the Wiz make Beal available this season by the deadline. They won't have the cap room for a 5 yr deal unless they can go over the apron.
Other than the $9.5MM NT-MLE, the Kemba TPE is our largest and that's only $6.9MM.
Kanter appears to have been a VM contract.

Yes sir to Schroder! Next trade Marcus to the Bulls for Markkanen, throw in a pick if necessary!! Schroder, Brown, Tatum, Markkanen and Rwill!! We get taller and better!!

If Schroeder is signed that ends any hope for Markkanen or Bagley ... My prediction would be a VM to Milsap as backup PF to Tatum with Parker in reserve if he sticks.
Oops, KyCeltic is right! We could use Smart as trade bail with a pick to land Lauri ... Swipe Left!

I would not mind us signing Schroder. But we are going to have to follow that up with another deal because we have too many wings/guards.

Dennis Schroder in negotiations with Celtics The Lakers free agent guard Dennis Schroder watched money dry up after reportedly declining a four-year, $80-million extension last year with LA. Boston is limited in what it can offer. By Bobby Manning
Michael Scotto reported that the Celtics would utilize a non-taxpayer mid level exception for a one-year deal, or two years with a player option. He wrote “the Celtics and Schroder have interest in a short-term deal.” That’s because Boston is currently limited in what it can offer Schroder. With no cap space, only some form of the mid-level exception is available to Brad Stevens. Once the delayed Tristan Thompson trade inevitably goes through and lands Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando in Boston, the Celtics are out of roster spots following yesterday’s Enes Kanter signing. So what’s the shoe to drop that could usher Schroder into Boston? Adam Himmelsbach initially reported the Celtics could reroute Dunn’s one-year, $5 million contract to open a roster spot. That could be part of what delayed the original deal from happening before the Kanter trade exception expired that Dunn would’ve fit into for Boston in the previous league year. If Stevens successfully clears Dunn’s salary, it would free the Celtics down to roughly $132-million in salary. That would be enough to free up a one-year, $9,536,000 contract that would provide Schroder a competitive salary for this season and get him back into free agency next year — while allowing Boston to keep its summer, 2022 cap space free. A full mid-level deal for Schroder would hard cap the Celtics at $143-million though, hampering their flexibility throughout the regular season into next year’s draft. A $5.9-million taxpayer mid-level exception would cost the Celtics less in luxury tax this season and avoid a hard cap. It’s unclear if that would be enough to land Schroder in Boston, but given his market dry-up it just might be for the playing time Boston could provide. A sign-and-trade to land him in Boston is all but doubtful, given that the Celtics would have to sign Schroder to a three-year contract to acquire him via sign-and-trade.
Admin Comment: It would be poetic justice for us to get a PG for the taxpayer MLE after the Knicks got Kemba for $8MM/yr

Im not arguing over certain management screw ups. But just because you went to an ECF doesnt mean youre ready to win a championship or really that youre close. This teams "core" of Jaylen/Tatum have been to 2. Obviously 18, when their 2 best players got hurt and last year in a bubble when they didnt need to face anybody and still lost. To me, they ran into a couple years and thats great. Doesnt mean theyre anywhere close to ready. Tatum and Brown are 23/24 years old. Theyre still 4 years away from their primes. Trying to garner superstars is the way you play it, and they got unlucky and failed. It was worth a try. MIL was built mostly through the draft for example or at least organically. Giannis was drafted in 13, Middleton in 12. Thats 8-10 years since entering the league. And realistically, they were fortunate with injuries as well. Its just incredibly hard to do it successfully. We can nitpick all we want, but the tough realization is its nearly impossible to achieve solly, you can't dismiss the effect of Celtic management screw ups when analyzing the progress/lack of progress of the Celtics. You can't just ignore that and resort to the basic claim that it's nearly impossible to build a contender "through the draft". You're stating the obvious. You're right that you cannot build a championship team ALONE by waiting to draft 3 to 4 elite players over several years and then surrounding them with other high-quality role players. Of course challenging but that isn't what many Celtics fans believe has been going on. The Celtics have been absolutely, positively set up perfectly with a treasure trove of draft picks and good players, so this should not have been the customary 9 year championship build. And the main fault lies on Celtics management, primarily DA. And, yes, when your TEAM makes 3 ECFs in 4 years, that does mean you're close. Disagree heavily with the last part. The 2016 Celtics were not close to being a championship contender for example, just because you got there doesnt mean youre elevated to new heights. They had a ton of picks, failed to trade some for veterans for sure. They ended up with 2 all star players out of it as well. They were set up perfectly, they had Kyrie, Hayward and 2 high lottery picks. Injuries/Kyrie ruined that core of the team. It wasnt for lack of trying, it was really bad luck. They mightve never won anyway to be honest. And I am not saying you need to wait to draft 3 or 4 elite players alone...But if youre building through the draft, your best players surely will be found there. And these ones were, and theyre young. Young players dont lead teams to championships. Im sure the MIL management was under fire for years with fans being unhappy with underachieving teams. They have a multiple time MVP as well. These guys take a lot of time to develop into the best players they can be and the problem with the Celtics is the top of the roster, not the bottom Like I said, I dont disagree...there were some moves to be made that werent, etc. But that doesnt mean DA screwed the Celtics. A great example, Draft Fultz and Kris Dunn in 16/17. Hows your team look?

well, if nothing else it would be painfully funny try to watch Kanter and Markkanen try to play defense (if they were on the floor together)!
Dunn and a pick for Markk would be my limit ( and the team would have to control him 3 years or more. But doesn't that screw up their over all plans?

The Celtics seem confident that this would not interfere with the overarching plan to cash in on the free agency class next year. Smart’s deal, if they’re looking to trade him for Bradley Beal, would work as tradable salary (either in a sign-and-trade or to another team into space looking for a PG). Extending Smart and Robert Williams wouldn’t shut the door on potential avenues of team improvement next summer in the way that signing other multi-year deals for other FAs this summer would.

Just like Ive been saying. We should absolutely extend Smart, extend RWill, and sign Schroeder for 2 years at NT-MLE. Suddenly we'll have tradeable contracts!! Grays skies are clearing up! But no, we should not blow our load for Markk using Smart (our main piece that would go in a S+T next season). I'll do Nesmith for Markk though (all day).

Tradeable contracts will be important for our future. Having some mid-teens to twenty million dollar long-term contracts, when combined, make for good assets in a trade for a high-salary player.

Under contract is the 1st paragraph in this report:
What are Celtics remaining free agency options after Enes Kanter signing? By Brian Robb | brobb@masslive.com
AP
Over 50 players have agreed to new deals in the first week of NBA free agency but the Celtics have only added one name to their roster so far. Boston came to terms on a one-year deal with former center Enes Kanter on Wednesday per a league source, less than nine months after the team dealt him away to the Portland Trail Blazers in an offseason salary dump that didn’t work out particularly well for the franchise.
While it’s been a very quiet first few days of free agency overall after some weekend dealing for Brad Stevens, it is far from likely Boston’s offseason roster makeover is close to complete. Boston’s three-way trade that involves them (for now) landing Kris Dunn, Bruno Fernando and a second-round pick for Tristan Thompson is still unofficial, opening the door for that deal to be expanded before it’s announced. The Celtics also still have numerous free-agent cap exceptions and trade exceptions that they can still spend this summer.
However, with 15 players currently under contract, Brad Stevens still has the option of standing patient if he chooses. Let’s break down where Boston’s current depth chart stands and what could be on the horizon for the front office in the days to come.
Under contract for 2021-22
Jayson Tatum: $28.1 million
Al Horford: $27 million
Jaylen Brown: $26.8 million
Marcus Smart: $14.3 million
Josh Richardson: $11.6 million
Kris Dunn: $5 million (if not traded)
Romeo Langford: $3.8 million
Rob Williams: $3.6 million
Aaron Nesmith: $3.6 million
Enes Kanter: $2.7 million
Grant Williams: $2.6 million
Jabari Parker: $2.3 million (non-guaranteed)
Payton Pritchard: $2.1 million
Carsen Edwards: $1.7 million
Bruno Fernando: $1.7 million (if not traded)
Total: $136 million estimated committed to 15 players including dead cap hits. Could drop lower if Parker’s deal is cut
Current Celtics depth chart (16 players)
Guards: Smart, Richardson, Pritchard, Dunn, Edwards
Wings/Forwards: Tatum, Brown, Nesmith, Langford, Parker, Hauser (two-way)
Bigs: R. Williams, Horford, Kanter, G. Williams, Fernando
2021-22 NBA Estimates:
Salary cap: $112.4 million
Projected Luxury tax: $136.6 million
Projected Apron: $143 million
2021 Celtics free agents
Evan Fournier (unrestricted with Bird Rights): Agreed to deal with Knicks for $78 million over four years (last year was a player option)
Semi Ojeleye: Agreed to a one-year deal with the Bucks for one year at the veteran’s minimum.
Luke Kornet: Still an unrestricted free agent but unlikely to return to Boston after team signed Kanter to provide additional center depot.
Tacko Fall: Outside chance he could come back but he’s not playing Summer League with the Celtics and the team did not give him a qualifying offer in free agency. He will likely have to seek out a two-way deal elsewhere.
Tremont Waters: The Celtics did not extend him a qualifying offer and he will be looking for a new opportunity in the NBA or overseas after two seasons in Boston.
Celtics 2021 offseason signings and trade acquisitions
Josh Richardson: Acquired for Moses Brown on July 31. Was taken in Gordon Hayward traded player exception:
Kris Dunn: Acquired for Tristan Thompson. Still unclear if he will play in Boston since the deal is not official.
Bruno Fernando: Acquired for Tristan Thompson. Still unclear if he will play in Boston since the deal is not official.
Enes Kanter: One-year signing at the veteran’s minimum.
Sam Hauser: One year two-way deal for the undrafted forward out of Virginia. He will suit up for Boston’s summer league team in Las Vegas.
Remaining traded player exceptions
$5 million (Daniel Theis trade) — This could end up being used soon depending on how the team structures Kris Dunn deal with Atlanta.
$6.8 million (Kemba Walker trade)
$9.7 million (Tristan Thompson trade?) — The creation of this exception will be dependent on how team structures Thompson trade to Sacramento
Free agent exceptions still available
$5.9 million taxpayer mid-level exception: It is possible the Celtics could gain access to the bigger $9.5 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception if they trim some salary off the roster (about $5 million). That would enable them to spend the full mid-level while staying under the hard cap of $143 million which gets triggered when a team uses more than the taxpayer mid-level exception of $5.9 million. However, whether the Celtics are willing to spend into the tax during what is looking like a potential bridge season for the franchise with a primary focus in planning on flexibility for 2022 free agency remains to be seen.
What options do Celtics still have in free agency in 2021?
1. Get creative with trades to add a veteran or two: The Celtics have the ability to take in about $12 million in salary in the Tristan Thompson trade before it becomes official. Otherwise, the team will still have two sizable trade exceptions for Thompson’s salary and part of Kemba Waker’s TPE ($6.8 million). That type of money won’t bring any big names but could land Boston a useful veteran or two that some other team could be trying to move out amid luxury tax concerns or a roster logjam.
2. Find some bargains on the market with mid-level exception: Almost all of the teams with significant salary cap room have used their cash in the first week of free agency. However, there are a long list of useful free agents still available and looking for work. Boston is just one team on the list of franchises that still have their mid-level exceptions to spend but they also can offer some significant opportunities at multiple positions off the bench. Boston could certainly use another point guard to help replace Kemba Walker as well as a stretch power forward to provide depth behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Is it possible they could land a solid name still left on the market (Dennis Schroder? Avery Bradley? Paul Millsap?) that is looking for a decent short-term payday and good opportunity on a playoff team? That’s certainly a path that would help Boston move up the playoff power rankings in the East while remaining flexible for the future.
3. Stand mostly pat to avoid the luxury tax and evaluate the team’s young bench players: The Celtics don’t look like they have the ability to make a splashy addition this offseason and that places them below the top tier of teams in the East as currently constructed. Boston will clearly try to compete under new head coach Ime Udoka and should be a playoff team with the team’s current talent but the case could be made that allowing opportunities for younger guys off the bench is a better idea than bringing in stopgap veterans. If the Celtics want to save cash for a contending push in 2022 and beyond while trying to build the value of their recent draft picks, a quiet approach like this would fit the description.
