If I call someone a drop center, it usually means a C w no defensive versatility. Cant cover on the perimeter. And even at the basket, a good slasher can still go right around them. I can live w a C with a big mans only offensive game - meaning no touch (no hook shot, no mid range) - as long as they arent drop centers (defensively). But my peeve is turnstiles (meaning not good at rotating their hips, low agility) and low foot speed players. These guys just can only defend at the rim and only when guys go right at them. Trey goes around Plumlee and Poeltl w ease. So their one job, defending the rim, they are even flawed at that. Thats why they are lower in CraftedNBAs rim protection score than more versatile centers like Jalen Smith. To me, if you got slow hips and slow foot speed, I slap the Kanter label on you. Rob is a drop center, but he's as good as they come so I can live with him. Al (because of aging) is quickly becoming a drop center also. This year, his defensive metrics are way better when he's protecting the rim. Which is why I dont like them together (offensively it works cuz Al can play perimeter O, but not so much perimter D anymore). Kornet is a drop Center. I prefer 0, we have 3. So the last thing I want is more. Not to imply Rob and Al have no place on my team. I just dont like them together.
Check out a comparison of Smith to Muscala on CraftedNBA ... other than ORBs, Muscala wins hands down!
hang back big in the bottom 10% of defensive versatility. Pass.

Am I miss-reading the overall results?
OPM/DPM = 71/77 Muscala vs 38/15 Smith ... are you basing entire judgement on "Versatality" alone?

Yeah, the overall results are inflated by box score stats. There are ways to game their system. The versatility metric is the most important metric for a big defensively. At least considering our needs. I bet this scoring system LOVED Kanter. Cuz his box score stats were impressive. But he couldnt move his hips and hes out the league.

B Robb @ masslive.com reports this:
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reports that Boston is testing out the value of reserve guard Payton Pritchard and injured forward Danilo Gallinari in hopes of bringing in some help for the team’s frontcourt. Jakob Poeltl and Mo Bamba are two names that would fit the salary structure for a hypothetical swap per Fischer. A Poeltl trade would require the inclusion of additional draft compensation per a league source. The Celtics are highly unlikely to pursue Bamba in a deal that includes Pritchard without getting back other assets.
Comment: So ORL has no player that would be a fit meaning draft capital - a high 2nd or two (future consideration)

Bad news for Vanderbilt fans:The Lakers have long been looking to offload Westbrook’s $47 million expiring contract as they have finally appeared to found a trade partner. In the deal, Charania reported that Westbrook would be headed to the Jazz, Mike Conley would go to the Timberwolves and D’Angelo Russell would be headed back to the Lakers. There are other parts of the deal, including first-round picks along with Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt.
Update from HoopsRumors.com
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link), Jazz swingman Malik Beasley and Jazz forward Jarred Vanderbilt have been included in versions of the proposed trade. Charania confirms as much, tweeting that those two players would end up with the Lakers.
The three teams continue to negotiate and are working through draft picks and pick protections, sources tell The Athletic. Wojnarowski cautions that the Jazz remain involved in other trade discussions involving Conley, so it’s not a sure thing that this three-team swap will be completed.
Comment: Hello Danny? The Lakers? What great picks you getting from them for Westbrooks bloated contract? You won't be winning that trade if you follow thru with it.

Brian Robb poo-poo's a Mo Bama for Payton Pritchard trade ...
Phelan M. Ebenhack, AP
Why Mo Bamba for Payton Pritchard doesn’t make sense for Boston
By Brian Robb | brobb@masslive.comPritchard and Gallinari make a combined $8.6 million this year and packaging those guys with another minimum salary on the roster would open the door for Boston to acquire a player earning $12 million or less in a hypothetical deal. There are a number of bigs who fall within those salary limitations but one notable one that Fischer suggested likely shouldn’t: Magic big man Mo Bamba. The 24-year-old center has been largely in and out of the Magic rotation for the past month and is currently suspended after taking part in a brawl with Austin Rivers earlier this week. Bamba’s numbers look fine on paper (39 percent from 3 is appealing) but the fact that he hasn’t developed into anything on a rebuilding Magic squad is telling. The five-year veteran was overpaid on a two-year deal last offseason with the second year of his contract unguaranteed and that’s a sign that the Magic didn’t have the faith to make a long-term investment in the former No. 6 overall pick. Could the Celtics use someone like Bamba for extra depth? Perhaps. Would they want him at the cost of Payton Pritchard? Certainly not since it’s debatable whether Bamba is even an upgrade on Luke Kornet for this current roster. Pritchard is cheaper, under contract through next year and is the far more proven performer on a big stage than Bamba. The Celtics certainly wouldn’t expect a guy who can’t get minutes in Orlando regularly now to make a splash on a true contender. There’s also an added cost with landing a player like Bamba with the Celtics’ luxury tax bill. His $10.3 million salary would mean millions more in luxury tax penalties and that’s not worth it for a guy with his limitations even before getting into the asset cost. For a second-round pick, the Celtics could consider it. Anything more than that would be far too costly. Either way, if the Celtics are looking for making a meaningful upgrade at the trade deadline, they can do far better than Bamba especially if they are offering Pritchard in the deal.
Rebuttal: B Robb ... "Perhaps?" Really? Where you gonna find another 7 footer who can shoot the 3-ball, run the court and defend/rebound as a backup? Markkanen is gone! Let me remind you that Pritchard wants out and we don't need him. If we get a pick or two back that covers that! As far as luxury tax goes ... we'd be sending out $10.8MM for $10.3MM if Jackson is included ... we'd save tax $ !!!!!!!!!!! Oh and unlike Poeltl, Bama has a 2nd year that becomes guaranteed if picked up by 6/29/23. So if he blows we can walk away and end up with a 2nd or two picks for PP. That's the risk ... choose your poison - Bama for C or PP at G - which do we need more?

I guess the locker room incident is forgiven then. But D'Angelo may still be sore.

Someone explain to me why Ainge got his booty taken by the Lakers ... a protected 1st and two prospects? Maybe he has a taker for Westbrook lined up for another 1st RDP or a 2nd or two (Clips & Bulls want him if a buyout happens) ... otherwise I'm missing something.
A three-team deal involving the Lakers, Jazz and Timberwolves is in the process of being finalized, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The trade will send Minnesota guard D’Angelo Russell to L.A., along with Utah’s Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt.
The Wolves will get point guard Mike Conley, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the less favorable of the Wizards’ and Grizzlies’ second-round picks in 2024 (from the Lakers) and Utah’s second-round picks in 2025 and 2026, sources tell Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
Utah will receive Russell Westbrook and a 2027 first-round pick from the Lakers that is top-four protected. In addition, the Jazz will acquire Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones.

Trail Blazers Trading Josh Hart To Knicks by Arthur Hill
The Knicks have reached an agreement to acquire Josh Hart from the Trail Blazers, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Portland will receive Cam Reddish and a first-round pick as part of the return.
Hart has an expiring $12.96MM contract, while Reddish is earning $5.95MM in the final year of his rookie deal, so at least one more player has to be included to match salaries. Sources tell Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype that Svi Mykhailiuk ($1.97MM) and Ryan Arcidiacono ($2.13MM) are also headed to the Blazers, (Twitter link).
The pick that New York is giving up is lottery protected for 2023, per Wojnarowski (Twitter link). If it doesn’t convey this year, it will turn into four future second-round picks.

That's for sure ...
“Toronto in general, they kind of hold the keys to this deadline, aside from the Nets, because they hold all the top players,” reported Ian Begley on SportsNet New York’s ‘The Putback’ podcast on February 8. And they’re talking to the Nets and I’ve heard as of last night, they have been adamant about getting Nic Claxton back in any kind of deal with Brooklyn…They’re playing hardball with Brooklyn and you’d expect them to. They don’t have to trade OG Anunoby. They don’t have to trade Pascal Siakam. So they would be looking for the best deal possible.”

Sounds like he wanted more from us than the Lakers so Brad left the room for bigger fish:
In Vanderbilt’s case, the Boston Celtics were not involved due to Danny Ainge’s high asking price.
Ainge has been a mastermind in the past rebuilding teams, with his finest work being the one-year break from the postseason in 2014 the mid-2010s Celtics had. Utah is his latest reclamation project, and he did a good job clearing their books in the future and add a 15th pick between now and 2029.
The reason he has done so well is because of his strong negotiating tactics. MassLive’s Brian Robb revealed that intel on a fireworks-filled February 8 pre-deadline evening:
“Boston has been searching for a backup big but league sources indicated the team was not high on Vanderbilt as a target based on the Jazz asking price.”
The Boston Celtics have sights set on bigger target
As it turns out, the Boston Celtics are after Jakob Poeltl after all. It was thought that they might back off in a pursuit of the Spurs pivot, but he was the subject of trade rumors involving a Celtics trade package that would include Payton Pritchard and Danilo Gallinari. Marc Stein reported that Poeltl is very available:
Even if Poeltl ends up on the Raptors as has been reported is possible given Toronto and San Antonio’s trade talks, the Celtics have their eyes set on a veteran difference-maker at the deadline.
Comment: So maybe Poeltl is Plan A and Bama is Plan B or Brad is dealing quietly for Anunoby

How Celtics trade landscape changes after Lakers-Jazz-Wolves blockbuster deal
By Brian Robb | brobb@masslive.com
Lakers snag a potential Celtics target
The Russell Westbrook experience finally came to an end on Wednesday in LA as the team upgrades with former Laker D’Angelo Russell at the point guard spot. It takes them a 2027 first-round pick to unload Westbrook but they manage to grab some good bench reinforcements in the process with Beasley and Vanderbilt. Boston has been searching for a backup big but league sources indicated the team was not high on Vanderbilt as a target based on the Jazz asking price. Boston has shown interest in Jazz big man Kelly Olynyk in recent weeks as well but Vanderbilt is one low-salaried target who is now off the board.
Trade market should heat up and should be friendlier to buyers than had been expected
Usually in the days leading up to the trade deadline, there is a build up of moves but things were especially quiet in recent days beyond Kyrie Irving’s trade demand. The likely reason was the likelihood of this deal going down involving Westbrook as a lot of teams were waiting on the Lakers first-round pick a potential trade chip to be moved with him as well as some other trade targets involved in this deal as potential dominoes to fall. Now, things will begin to heat up as the bidding on remaining trade targets becomes clear with asking prices coming down and the trade market being set. The good news for the Celtics? Vanderbilt did not go for a high price in this instance and that bodes well for their chances of finding a big on the open market without breaking the bank.
Danny Ainge bets big against Lakers
This deal is all about the Jazz betting on Lakers’ failures once LeBron James retires a few years down the line. He’s piled up plenty of picks from the Wolves already for Rudy Gobert and now has one more priced asset as he roots for a host of teams to fail down the line (Cavs, Wolves, Lakers) to build a contender in Utah.

I think Mo Bama is Plan B if Poeltl went to Toronto ... Just a guess. Here's the KD trade: Nets, Suns Agree On Kevin Durant TradeFebruary 9th 2023 at 12:11am CST by Arthur HillThe Suns will acquire Kevin Durant from the Nets in exchange for Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, four first-round picks and more draft consideration, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic. Jae Crowder, who has been sitting out since training camp in hopes of being traded, will also go to Brooklyn in the deal, Charania adds (Twitter link). ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports (via Twitter) that Nets forward T.J. Warren will be part of the trade as well, and the additional draft consideration is a first-round pick swap in 2028. According to Woj, Durant wanted to be dealt to Phoenix, and new Suns owner Mat Ishbia pushed to get the deal completed tonight. Brooklyn will receive unprotected first-rounders in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029, a source tells Wojnarowski. The trade will help to replenish the Nets’ draft assets after they sent multiple picks and pick swaps to Houston to acquire James Harden in 2021.
