Wyc Grousbeck Instructed Brad Stevens To Pursue A Title by Arthur Hill
The Celtics will approach the trade deadline with a philosophy of trying to win the title this season, owner Wyc Grousbeck said in an interview with NBC Sports Boston (video link). When asked about his message to president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, Grousbeck responded,

This is making me greedy ... I want Bruce Brown, Jalen McDaniels and either Mason Plumlee or Zach Collins.
Is that too much to ask for Wyc?

one wonder what he Really told Stevens behind closed doors.
I mean we all know he squeaks when he walks.
I mean they let the Herman Gomez TPE expire without a whimper last week, so yea call me sceptical.
The trade deadline will tell what he really said, IMO.

on that note:
what does everyone think about to so-called Poeltl rumors that are still firing up?
my thoughts (as I have expressed) is that it's just SA trying to drive up the price for him and Boston really isn't chasing him. I have a hard time seeing why Boston would bring him in only as a upgrade over Kornet ( and on an expiring deal).
BUT:
if I am wrong and Stevens IS chasing him in a trade....maybe it's for a bigger role?
could something like
Poeltl (9.4M- Expiring and McDermott (13.75 plus one more year) be a possibility?
It would obviously fix the addition outside shooter issue with McDermott, but what would the likely cost be?
Rob Williams, Gallo and Pritchard would work for salary matching....... I wonder if Boston making that 2028 pick no longer a swap but fully SA would be enough to get it done?
For sure Moving Rob would trigger many Celtic fans and Stevens would have to know AND be willing to pay Poeltl on a new deal.
But honestly unless it's something big like this I don't see the desire/need for Poeltl here myself, especially at the cost the Spurs want for his expiring deal.

I'm certain Brown is flattered by this report. And I'm sure other teams will pursue him too.
However, so what! This means nothing!
Who in their right mind thinks Jaylen would go to Houston, of all places?
Houston has a few young talented players but they are nowhere close to even vying for a playoff spot.
Jaylen Brown 'MIGHT' help get them CLOSER to the "Play-in game" but he's not going to make that much of a difference in Houston.
It's a great article but it means nothing as far as where Brown will be in a year.

And with Houston having $59M in REAL cap space next season, they could do the trade I offered and still have up to $48M to sign Harden as a free agent also. do not underestimate how the new CBA rules are going to effect team way over the cap. Wyc never likes to spend in the first place and paying TWO possible super max deals not only cost him a boatload, but it will hamstrung what Brad can do to add any talent as well moving forward. the new CBA makes it much harder for teams at the top of the salary structure to stay competitive over time now. this may give Wyc the cover he may be looking for to move Brown and place the blame on the new CBA.

the new CBA makes it harder to pay two players a super max deal for one reason.
Wyc is cheap for a second one
Brown may want to leave based on his recent interviews.

If Brown were to leave, it would be the worst career decision he could make IF his desire is to win.
Houston could bring Harden back and, with Brown, they are STILL A PLAY-IN TEAM.
The Udoka link is nice but I've also heard Vogel's name mentioned as a possible HOU HC.
And despite what Brown is saying, I'm not certain he's ready to leave.

well, the new CBA is going to make it difficult for teams to stay above the new second tax line ( $175M over the regular tax line). IF Boston signs both Brown and Tatum to anything close to super max deals, they will be locked into that higher tax line for the duration of those contracts. good explanation here for those not following along on the thread I created the other day about this: hoopshype.com/lists/new-nba-cba-explained/

Quote from that link:
The only way teams over the second apron can further increase payroll is by re-signing their own players, signing draft picks, and signing minimum players. The removal of the MLE and the inability to take on more salary in trades are so restrictive to over-the-second-apron teams it’s essentially putting a de facto end to their team-building cycle. The teams that are in support of this essentially got their upper spending limit without actually naming it that.

And that pisses me off cuz we could have had McDaniels for Pritchard and now PP is injured contributing nothing and McDaniels is a regular rotation guy with the Sixers. Brad blew it on that one ... he was the wing we needed.
