The league released its first batch of All-Star fan voting Thursday, which decides the starters for the game. The fans account for 50% of the vote, while the media and NBA players each get 25% of the vote. The next batch of fan voting will come out Jan. 12. While Brown and Tatum are firmly part of the All-Star conversation, they have some work to do to be named starters.
The positions are broken down between frontcourt players and guards. Tatum came in at fourth in the East in the frontcourt with 2,178,330 votes, sliding in behind the Nets’ Kevin Durant, the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and the 76ers’ Joel Embiid. While Tatum has generated some MVP hype this season, the East has multiple noteworthy forwards he has to go up against for All-Star starter.
Brown comes in at fourth place among the East guards with 1,032,522 votes, behind the Nets’ Kyrie Irving, the Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell and the 76ers’ James Harden. Interestingly, Tatum has more total votes than Irving (2,071,715 votes), who leads the East guards.
The Lakers’ LeBron James leads all players in the NBA with 3,168,694 votes, though Durant is close behind him at 3,118,545 votes. The West frontcourt top-3 leaders are James, the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic and the Lakers’ Anthony Davis. The West guard top-3 leaders are the Warriors’ Stephen Curry, the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and the Grizzlies Ja Morant.
