Whether the Vonleh deal is a precursor for a bigger move remains to be seen ...
Celtics Trading Vonleh To Spurs; Spurs Waiving Gieng, Vonlehby Rory MaherThe Celtics are trading big man Noah Vonleh and cash considerations to the Spurs, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). The Spurs are waiving center Gorgui Dieng to create a roster spot for Vonleh, who will also be waived, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). The trade is a salary dump move for Boston, as Vonleh’s contract is non-guaranteed and would have been fully guaranteed on Saturday. The Celtics will free up a roster spot and save $7.15MM toward the luxury tax, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. San Antonio has plenty of cap room available — $27.1MM, per Marks — to waive Dieng’s guaranteed salary without worrying about the financial implications. He was on a veteran’s minimum deal and rarely saw the court this season, appearing in just 13 games with averages of 4.1 PPG, 3.2 RPG and 2.0 APG in 11.6 MPG. Like Gieng, the 27-year-old Vonleh was a deep-bench reserve for Boston. In 23 games, he averaged just 7.4 minutes per contest. The ninth overall pick of the 2014 draft, Vonleh has played for eight different teams in as many NBA seasons. He played in China in 2021/22. www.hoopsrumors.com/

If no deal is imminent for Bamba or Olynyk (either of whom can play the 4 or 5) then Brad needs to "save" Simonic with at least a 2-way before we lose him.
We can always move Jackson to get a shooter/wing in another trade. And there's always the possibility of trading Pritchard for a PF and bringing up Valentine as a safety net.

When it comes to another shoe, the C's have these trade vehicles still available according to Brian Robb at masslive.com :
The team still holds six trade exceptions created over the last year but there are only two notable ones that will be useful in any potential deal as the Celtics now have an open roster spot to take in an additional player.
$6.9 million (Juancho Hernangomez trade, expires 1/19/23) $5.9 million (Dennis Schroder trade, expires 2/10/23)
The Celtics were also granted a disabled player exception for Danilo Gallinari worth $3.2 million last year. They can use that to trade for a player on an expiring contract or sign a player on the buyout market in free agency this year to a one-year deal. In all likelihood, it will be the latter option if they chose to use it since few players on the trade market make under $3.2 million.
The Celtics will also gain some luxury tax savings by removing Vonleh’s cap hit from their roster in the deal, which is why cash was included in the deal. A league source expects a highly protected draft pick to come back to Boston as part of the trade.
Admin Comment: Meanwhile, for doing us a favor in taking on the remainder of Vonleh's contract (about $1.8M) the C's gave up some cash to eliminate Vonleh's cap hold and will get a TPE worth about $1.18M and some worthless asset back from the Spurs ... either a highly protected 2nd round draft pick that will never execute or the rights to some failed D&S player that the Spurs have given up on that will likely never see an NBA court other than on a TV.

Per hoopsrumors.com
Because Vonleh’s cap hit is no longer on their books, the Celtics will save about $7.1MM on their projected luxury tax bill, so sending out just $1.5MM to realize those savings was a no-brainer for Boston.
As for the Spurs, they’ll only owe Vonleh about $28K in salary for the two days he spends on waivers, but will have to pay Gorgui Dieng an additional $992K for the rest of the season, since his salary was fully guaranteed. Still, factoring in the $1.5MM in cash that they got from Boston, the Spurs will come out about $480K ahead after waiving both players — on top of that, they have a newly opened roster spot, which they could use to take fliers on 10-day signees.
The draft pick the Spurs sent to the Celtics in the deal is San Antonio’s top-54 protected 2024 second-rounder, tweets Marks.

I hope the next shoe to drop is a guy like Vando or PJ Washington.
Right now Bamba is not a priority because Joe is not a fan of the double-big lineup.
Al starts and Rob comes off the bench.
Might as well get an upgrade to replace Hauser in the rotation.

Bamba makes a bit over 10mil.
Kelly makes a bit over 14 i believe.
More tax to pay because we can't match the salary on a trade.
Are we paying double tax or even triple like we did for Vonlegh.? That would be 20 to 40 mil a year .
Wyc will pay? We'll see.
Or does our mle overide the tax?
Himmlebach or what ever his name was said we might stand pat.. 50/50 or better i believe he's right.

We are not trading contracts to upgrade this team.
Any additions will be for a TPE and a 2nd rd draft pick with a TPE being created to go along with the open roster spot to the trade partner otherwise we use the Disabled Player Exception for a buyout candidate.
> $6.9M TPE > $5.9M TPE > $3.2M DPE
We need a sniper and a big that can spread the floor or score at will in the paint.
Vanderbilt, PJ Wa and Naz Reid all fit the TPE's available but do they fit our needs? I like Achiuwa (Raptors for defense & rebounding) and he fits as well if Raps decide to lighten their big load. ANother possibility with the Raps is swapping one injured player for another - they'd like to move Otto Porter Jr ($6M/$6.3M) due to extended rehab for a dislocated toe and he'd make an even swap for Gallo ($6.4M/$6M PO). If Otto's injury heals sooner than Gallo's, he'd be a nice addition come playoff time. No cost to us and Raps save a yr if Gallo ops out next season and goes back to Europe.
I like Bama but he is not doable this season.

All Eyes on the Raptors!
The player development magic that has helped make the Raptors successful in the past has vanished this season, writes Eric Koreen of The Athletic. The team doesn’t have enough reliable rotation players to complement its top guys and has had to rely too heavily on its starters, as Koreen and Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca observe.
While some of those top Raptors players, such as Fred VanVleet, are seemingly having down years, Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca argues that the Raptors have failed VanVleet more than he has failed the team — the former All-Star point guard has had to carry too substantial a workload due to Toronto’s lack of solid backcourt depth.
Given the talent on the Raptors‘ roster, potential buyers around the NBA are keeping a close eye on Toronto and may be reluctant to move forward on other deals until they see if the Raptors will be sellers, writes Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca. “Toronto are the first domino,” a league source who has been monitoring the Raptors told Grange. “What they do will affect teams all across the league: Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Atlanta – not that it’s about deals with any particular team, just that people are going to be waiting to see what the Raptors do before they make their moves. Toronto could set the market.”
Big man Precious Achiuwa, who had been out since November 9 due to a right ankle injury, returned to the court on Monday and recorded three points and three blocked shots in 12 minutes. He admitted after the game that his conditioning could use some work, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca. “I was so out of breath it was crazy,” Achiuwa said of his first four-minute stint. “I was so tired I couldn’t even drink water. It felt like I was going to pass out.” He added that he began to feel better during his later minutes.
Asked today if Otto Porter Jr. is making progress in recovery from his foot injury, head coach Nick Nurse didn’t offer much reason for enthusiasm, tweets Lewenberg. “He’s not, he’s not,” Nurse said. As Lewenberg notes (via Twitter), the hope was that Porter, who saw a specialist for his dislocated toe in mid-December, would be able to avoid surgery and return in January, but his outlook is cloudier now.

Celtics' Justin Jackson, Luke Kornet contracts guarantee for season after waiver deadline passes - Justin Jackson and Luke Kornet have reason to celebrate after sticking with the Celtics past a crucial date on the NBA calendar.
Comment: Classy of C's to keep Jackson thru the guarantee. If they need his roster spot they will pay him now if waived and not picked up by another team.

Spurs bring Dieng back on 10-day contract:
Just days after waiving him, the Spurs have agreed to re-sign big man Gorgui Dieng, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). A source tells Wojnarowski that San Antonio is bringing back Dieng on a 10-day contract. Having already locked in his full-season $2.64MM salary, Dieng will now get the opportunity to double-dip with the Spurs on a 10-day deal, which will pay him approximately $152K.

The 2nd shoe as we all know now was Justin Jackson but he wasn't to match Muscala's contract. He was a salary dump costing us a 2nd rd pick. Brad traded for Muscala using the TPE and another 2nd rd pick. And that concludes a ho-hum trade market for the Celtics other than the Buyout Market which isn't really a trade in any event. If nothing useful can be mined there, there's always a few vets balling in Maine anticipating a phone call to the Show:
2 veterans in Maine who could fill Boston Celtics wing vacancyby Andrew Hughes The Boston Celtics made a move at the trade deadline — acquiring Mike Muscala from the Thunder to become the third big in the team’s frontcourt — but they never addressed their lack of depth on the wing. Perhaps the front office doesn’t feel there is such a deficiency. Sam Hauser has been shooting the ball well in recent performances, so perhaps the team can get by until the postseason as is and then play Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown the bulk of the minutes. Grant Williams is enough of a threat from beyond the arc and could get to the rim well enough to play minutes at the 3 in bigger lineups. If Stevens was simply waiting for the buyout market to address that need, though, options like Danny Green, Justin Holiday, and Juan Toscano-Anderson could all be waived by the Rockets and Jazz. If none of those players float Stevens’ boat, however, Boston.com’s Tom Westerholm relays that the team could add a pair of veterans from Maine: “In a worst-case scenario, the Celtics have some players in Maine who could be a cheap way to fill the final roster spot, including Denzel Valentine and Tony Snell.
Obviously, the Celtics would like to do better than that, but remember: They aren’t replacing a rotation player. They are replacing Justin Jackson and Noah Vonleh.”

Of the 4 potential "buyout" candidates, Danny Green is said to have nearly every playoff bound team pursuing him. The odds don't favor the Celtics in prevailing when a player has so many options to choose from. Ross is already in talks with the Mavs - they can have him. Justin Holiday is the least favorable of these 4 potential targets but he'd be just fine if the top two (Green & Barton) don't pan out. B Robb has opined that Barton will want more minutes than he'll garner in Boston and he loves to shoot at will when he's in control. And that, according to Robb is why the C's should pass on "Will the Thrill." Check it out here: According to MassLive’s Brian Robb, Will Barton may not be able to come to terms on a free agent deal with the Celtics before the buyout deadline because there may not be enough playing time for the 32-year-old:
2 veterans the Boston Celtics could sign to play complementary roleBarton started all but four of the 127 games he appeared in the last two seasons with the Nuggets, so it’s understandable he’d want such a role again. He’s not getting it in Washington and can help a contender. The Boston Celtics are already dealing with that in Payton Pritchard, though. Adding a veteran midseason to potentially rock the boat is something that may lack prudence for Brad Stevens and the front office. In Barton’s place, Robb named two players who could be more willing to accept a secondary role on the Celtics this season: “I think the most realistic scenarios for targeting buyout guys in that spot is Danny Green and Terrence Ross. Both are veterans who have already made some decent money in this and could be lured at the best chance for a ring rather than a bigger opportunity elsewhere.”
Rebuttle: Barton could easily be the #3 wing on the Celtics getting plenty of PT as Mazz would be able to rest both Tatum and Brown on a regular basis for the final 26 or so games. If you get a wing to spell those two, don't you want an aggressive baller who can dribble, pass & shoot with confidence as needed to fill in for your primary scorers? Barton can create, pass, attack the rim and fill it up from the perimeter. Another scorer much like Brogdon but w/o the injury history who can play 25 mins/game on a nightly basis (durable).

Analyst wonders if remaining buyout market wing will sign with Boston Celtics by Andrew Hughes
Dan Greenberg of BSS believes that all of the available wings signing elsewhere means the lone forward remaining on the open market, Will Barton, could be bound to sign with the Boston Celtics after the Wizards cut him loose from his expiring $14.3 million salary for this season.
Terrence Ross signed with the Suns, Danny Green joined the Cavaliers, and Justin Holiday agreed to terms with the Mavericks — leaving Barton is the remaining wing. John Wall, Patrick Beverley, Stanley Johnson, Bryn Forbes, and Goga Bitadze are all free agents following post-deadline buyouts as well.
Greenberg tweeted out his trusty photo of Marcus Smart doing his best imitation of Auguste Rodin’s famous “The Thinker” while providing a caption featuring undeniable Brian Windhorst “Now Why is That?” vibes:
Will Barton would need to accept minimal role with Boston Celtics
Being that he made a good bit of above the median salary the past several seasons, Barton may be hunting for a big money contract with his next team. The Boston Celtics wouldn’t be able to provide him the same kind of role he had in Denver — instead likely being able to offer similar playing time to what he’s gotten in D.C.
Boston is in a good position to stay the course with Sam Hauser re-finding his shooting stroke, though filling the final roster spot opened up by the Noah Vonleh trade to San Antonio should be a priority. You never know when added depth could come in handy, and money is no object to team ownership in the pursuit of Banner 18 this spring.
With the team addressing the need for a big man, the final step Brad Stevens must take is bringing on a wing who could step in if necessary and isn’t looking for a big role. If Barton could be that guy, great. If not, there are two wings in Maine who would love the job too.

If Barton is gunning for a new contract for next season, he will want to play, a lot! He's not getting that chance in Boston. Like you said, not a good fit.

Based on link #2, Id say Will would be the perfect B-U to Tatum. He should garner plenty of mins relieving both J's for the remainder of the season to aid his "stats" for a new contract this summer ... who knows, even Brad may want to keep him.
