One of our numerous guards? Crowder for his defense? Amir for his expiring contract? Zeller in a S&T? Maybe a combo of picks and a guard get you something of need but for a major piece, the best we have to offer now is Olynyk.
Like Sully this season, Oly becomes a RFA next season unless he agrees to an extension. But why would he agree to a rookie extension with the $ being handed out this season with even more available next? If we are indeed gonna make a big trade for a Center or Scoring threat look for Oly to be a major piece in any trade ... Here's the catalyst for my post ... With Turner being a huge part of the rotation last season, it says a lot about Ainge’s determination to build around stars since he let their sixth man walk. Olynyk is an important part of their team, but he’s not irreplaceable. The Celtics are replacing their sixth man this year, and it’s not crazy to think they do the same thing again next year.
Olynyk provided the Celtics with consistent three-point shooting last season, and was the biggest offensive catalyst off the bench. Although, with not being a great fit with a franchise player on the court – Al Horford – and likely attracting a big multi-year contract, it makes it hard to believe Olynyk will be with Boston more than one season.
With another high draft pick that will likely be selected on a big, a free agent class that Ainge is already drooling over and the possibility of a trade, paying Olynyk is far from the top of Ainge’s list. hardwoodhoudini.com/2016/07/10/this-could-be-kelly-olynyks-last-year-with-boston/

Now for picks and guard prospects we might revisit the Sixers ... It appears Philadelphia 76ers big man Jahlil Okafor didn’t take too kindly to hearing his name come up in trade discussions this offseason. Heading into the NBA Draft Okafor’s name was linked to the Boston Celtics in a possible deal for the No. 3 overall pick. A deal didn’t happen, but according to Tom Moore of the Bucks County Courier Times, Sixers GM Bryan Colangelo “tried like hell' to trade Okafor and the second-year forward is “upset and his people are upset." Ok, throw Saric into the deal and you can have BRK's 2018 1st (top 3 protected), one of Rozier or Jackson and one of Hunter or Young. I still prefer Noel but if it takes Okafor to get Saric then I'm all in. Then trade for Gay and a small deal for a shooter like Morrow. www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/report-jahlil-okafor-upset-sixers-tried-hell-trade-him

Okafor would be fine. Getting Saric from them now would be highway robbery, as he is coming here this year. If we managed to acquire Saric, we would not need Gay anymore, as they play the same position, and we have Brown. All in for Morrow, but, again, we would have to dump Young somehow.

I think Okafor, Saric & Morrow would put us into contention without gutting all our depth. You're correct, if the trade for Okafor can net us Saric (a Simmons duplicate) we'd have no need for Gay or Koufos and could keep Zeller at QO (if that happens) and trade for Morrow and be set at a reasonable cost.

I think Okafor is a real possibility, but those tweets don't exactly sound like he's trying to shoot his way out of Philly.

hardwoodhoudini.com/2016/07/19/celtics-trade-kelly-olynyk/This story agrees with my premise that Kelly O is our most tradable asset but suggests a shooter like Jason Terry or a rim protector like John Henson? If that's all we can get for Oly then keep him and pick up my two favorite affordable options and be more athletic and younger ... 1) (SG) Anthony Morrow (3rd on OKC depth chart ... a trade s/b doable) 2) (C) Larry Sanders a FA wanting to make a comeback after a 1 yr hiatus from the NBA is a 7 footer with a 7'7" wingspan who can run the floor and protect the rim and the lane. The above link reinforces my theory that Morrow & Sanders would be two great fits for the Celtics if that's all we can get for Olynyk.

Now comes this Olynyk news ... This summer he [Olynyk] is eligible for a contract extension off his rookie deal, but the Celtics are more likely to wait a year and let him become a restricted free agent, reports Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. Forward/center Kelly Olynyk is eligible to sign a long-term deal before the Oct. 30 deadline but the Celtics are likely to wait until next summer to determine whether to invest in him long term. This is a critical season for Olynyk, who is coming off shoulder surgery. He will be depended on to be the floor-stretching sharpshooter the Celtics have desired the past three years. Olynyk has missed 43 games over his first three seasons, primarily because of injuries. The Celtics want more toughness and consistency from their former first-round pick Waiting is the smart play here for Boston, as is keeping its options open heading into next season (where Danny Ainge continues to look for another star to put next to Al Horford). Olynyk has value. He can stretch the floor, had a 57.7 eFG% on catch-and-shoot attempts, can score around the rim, shows good passing gifts, and the Celtics were 5.2 points per 100 possessions better than their opponents when he was on the court last season. Yes, he needs to be stronger on the boards and defensively (he’s not a rim protector), but a number of NBA teams could use him in a rotation spot. Which means, Olynyk is going to get a healthy pay bump next summer. But the Celtics don’t need to jump the gun to give it to him. www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/report-celtics-unlikely-extend-olynyk-making-him-2017-restricted-free-agent
