at 23 the young man will have its job and if he slacks he will get fired by his boss. Same principle different stage of his life. Or he will get a few warnings before he gets fired. He will learn from his mistakes as he goes along because there is fkn accountability. Whos firing Tatum? He has a skillset that is not easily replaced. He has all the leverage. A 23 year old kid in an office can be replaced by virtually anybody willing to accept a job. Its just not the same thing at all. Its the player over anybody in the organization in the NBA. Their skillset, or somebody with an elite skillset is something no team gives up on. Thats why high lottery picks are so valuable. Its the chance at getting a player with potential. you are telling me that tatum cant be traded just because his skillset? That doesn't win games as you can see. And same applies to the NBA, any player specially good can be traded. So. That you personally wouldnt do it, is a different story. He hasnt proven jack shit to me and we keep saying he is young. As much skillset and high ceiling and bullcrap doesnt make them exempt of a trade.

solly, Steve Kerr is doing a fine job in GSW. They have one less win than do the Celtics and they've had their best player out due to injury and the second best, Klay, hasn't even played this year. I'd say he's done a pretty good job.
Pop has done a good job with his team. Their record is better than is ours AND they have no all star players. Somehow he's gotten that team playing .500 basketball.
If Pop had 2 bonafide young all stars, you can bet the Spurs would not be 25 - 26 like we are right now.

Well, you said Fire him...To me trading him isnt firing him if you get another great young talent in return. Id be willing to trade him for the right package, but not many teams are willing to part ways with their young star players as well. Ask Dallas if they're giving up Luka, id trade Tatum for him. But realistically you arent getting equal value/potential in a return for what youd be giving up. I have been saying that he and JB are the problems with this team since the beginning of the year, you dont have to tell me what they are doing isnt leading to wins. But again, young players dont win in this league. But that doesn't mean you give up on him if he/they have the potential. To win, you need the highest of the high caliber players leading the roster, and right now the Celtics don't have any. Thats not the coaches fault, which is the main point in my arguement.

The standards are all over the place, Derozen was a perennial all star until he got to SA and hes still in his prime. You could easily argue that hes SA has made Derozen worse. People on this forum were begging for him. They have 8 guys averaging double figures and are .500. This is one of the greatest coaches ever, now that Duncan and Kawhi are gone, hes accomplished nothing. Hes the same coach though. Leads to the point, the players are all that matters here. The Celtics have been to the ECF quite a bit lately, and I wouldnt give Brad credit for that. The difference between those teams and this years team is the change of leadership on the floor.

For me, right now, we have no leaders and no true players. We have two very immature young players who have gone to 3 ECFs in the past 4 years but have learned NOTHING from those journeys.
How can you have gone through game sevens against Cleveland, Toronto, and Milwaukee over the past 4 seasons yet are unable to bring any level of intensity to a big regular season game like last night?
How can you be an alpha offensive leader yet "take off" the entire 1st quarter? How can you be an alpha-2 (Brown) and, while dribbling behind the back, entirely miss the dribble and the ball simply bounces out of bounds for a turnover?
How can you two alphas shoot 5 FTs COMBINED because they fear the physicality of going to the rim?
People, we aint going nowhere with these two unless we get a real alpha, not a play alpha.
I'm gonna start it now, Tatum is becoming Carmello Anthony.

What was KG at Minnesota? A league MVP, Defensive Player of the year who never had a good enough team to compete in the Western Conference at its height. Pierce was a mid tier All star, not even close to the same caliber of player yet he couldn't win! His role players must not have been good enough! Kinda like ours aren't good enough!!

Sure, if you want to compare JT and JB to KG then id agree. Except they couldnt hold a candle to Garnett and his ability. Pretty clear in the league you need Multiple great players, Garnett never had a 2nd great player

I agree with all of this, I said in a couple threads back that Tatum right now is trending to be a young Carmelo or honestly a young Pierce. And thats not a good thing. One of them needs to develop into a leader or they need to acquire one who is also great. The 2nd option might be near impossible

You are making a quality argument but I just believe absent of ELITE-LEVEL talent, coaching matters. Frank Vogel isn't a better coach because he now owns a NBA Championship because he has Lebron and AD and did not have those ELITE-LEVEL players in Indy. Spoelstra gets a lot of credit for having 3 HOF-level players in addition to guys like Ray Allen. Right now, Miami doesn't have any HOF players (maybe Butler down the road) and he got this team to the Finals last year. I also believe our championship window is getting smaller, not larger, and a major part of that is our players are not being held accountable. If we're going to get blown off the court vs Philly, I'm going to do it with my lead alpha on the bench because he doesn't play defense and he doesn't want to play disciplined offense within out scheme. When Tatum pounds the ball for 18 seconds, failing to move the ball, and launches a "missed" 3-pointer, the first thing you should hear is "Semi, for JT". When Smart takes one of those ill-advised 3pointers that we just talked about in the timeout huddle, the next thing you'll hear is "Romeo, for Smart". When that happens, undisciplined basketball continues by the players.

That is actually my point, Vogel isnt a great coach now, but he had Lebron and AD. Spoelstra had the big 3, and then was irrelevant. They made a run last year in...quite frankly an outlier year. Now theyre mediocre again. To achieve what we all want, the players are needed. This team doesnt have the players, yet (maybe ever). Like I said before, in 2016 the Celtics were a great regular season team because they played hard, moved the ball, etc. Eventually their talent ran out in the playoffs. Was Brad coaching them the right way then, but isnt now? Or are the players just not listening to him? These guys are old enough to know whats right and wrong, and that they should be giving effort. I dont think any amount of coaching can overcome a lack of that Elite talent. The Celtics dont have it. We can change whatever we want in terms of GM and coach, and all the role players. At then end of the day, if JT and JB are the best players...in 2021 this team isnt winning anything. I just dont see how we point to coaching.

A NBA coach is a manager of men, mature and immature men. Players have to want to be great. Players have to want to play hard and work hard but a coach must manage them. When they aren't playing hard, they should sit. When they are, they should play. Like you say, these guys are old enough to know how to play the game the right way. It's up to the coach to demand that of his players. I don't care how mature or immature the player is, it's the coach's responsibility to manage that player. I believe with a better manager (coach), that could make a difference in how these guys play.

Im sure these guys get directly criticized by coaching in practices and in the locker room. They dont seem to be responding. Theyre immature. A players ego isnt going away with a benching, that takes time to mold

Until JT and JB begin to exhibit, consistently, signs they are capable of reaching that ELITE level, they can sit. Not talking about benching them for an entire quarter but they are not beyond being benched. When they get benched, maybe they'll understand why they were benched. I'm sure the media will make something of it. Yesterday, Brown pounded the ball several times behind his back until he missed a dribble and the ball simply bounced out of bounds for another turnover. Had Brad simply said "Semi, for JB", Brown could be embarrassed but he should be more embarrassed dribbling the ball out of bounds showboating. A couple games ago, Tatum took the entire possession pounding the ball only to shoot an off-balanced difficult shot. Again, enter Brad, "Semi, in for JT". If JT doesn't know why he's on the bench, then he has growing to do. But I'd bet BOTH would definitely know why they were taken out the game at those instances. That is teaching. That is coaching.

last time I checked, 4 was bigger than 3
If you go from 4 guys who can score, to 3, you are worse than you were before.
We are also not tough.
Fournier is a nice fit, but losing asshole and Morris/Baynes killed this team.
It's on the GM, he gets the players, and more importantly, lets the players go.............

hedley, you are so right. Morris was our true PF, tough guy. And Baynes was a great fit in Boston and he just worked here.
Both were huge losses. I understand why we lost them (actually Morris) but they were huge.

They'll become better players, possibly better distributors, when they get others involved because they know pounding the ball for 9 seconds isn't an option. I don't think they are what they are in only 4-5 seasons. Both have a long way to go to improve their skillsets. If they are what they are ALREADY, then we may need to look at trade partners quickly for these guys because neither will be a #1 ON A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM. JT will become a better player by eliminating the 18 second pounding and the sole reliance on ISOs. They will become better players by eliminating those mediocre parts of their games and replacing them with things like ball movement and aggressively taking open shots. That's how you become better. To this day, Carmelo will stand near the elbow and ISO his man down and put up a shot. Nobody MADE him stop and that doesn't win.

Im sure Brad shows Tatum the tape of his awful possessions, if Tatums ego hasnt been brought down at all by the results, then it just doesnt matter to him. I dont think being benched for a stretch of a game is changing that. I dont think coaches end up developing these guys as much as we think. Do we give Mike Brown credit for developing Lebron, or Scott Brooks for Durant? These guys just find themselves if they are good enough, and it does take a while. You have to compare JT and JB to those guys, because thats what it takes to win.

CBS doesn't impress me as in any way confrontational toward his players, publicly or privately.
Maybe you know something I don't know about Brad and his willingness to hold Celtic players accountable.
Otherwise you are simply guessing... as am I.

How can you be so sure what sort of feedback/coaching CBS has actually provided JT?
CBS doesn't impress me as in any way confrontational toward his players, publicly or privately.
Maybe you know something I don't know about Brad and his willingness to hold Celtic players accountable.
Otherwise you are simply guessing... as am I.

I think we can say hes a functional coach, as he was a good college coach and above average NBA coach. To say hes not doing the fundamental coaching procedures would be pretty out there if you asked me. The guy is still a professional. I think its pretty safe to assume that a coach of his caliber is attending practice, talking to players and watching film...Regardless of how much anybody wants him fired, I think its safe to say hes doing those things.

If he will confront/hold players accountable publicly, we can safely assume that he does so in private.
And there is little evidence that he will hold his players publicly accountable.
In private, my guess is that he avoids confrontation/accountability too.
If you have solid evidence to the contrary, lay it on me!

If you want to assume he’s essentially negligent in his job, that’s your opinion. Id think a coach that has risen to his pedigree, completes the fundamental aspects of coaching. He was pretty open in his disappointment of the team postgame last week. Basically said they give up and don’t overcome adversity. I’m sure those frustrations are expressed to the team during the season.
