The Patriots’ free agency activity Tuesday was not be limited to Tom Brady leaving the building.
Cardinals wide receiver Damiere Byrd has agreed to sign a 1-year deal with the Pats, according to the NFL Network. Byrd is the Patriots’ first reported free-agent signing of the offseason. The fifth-year wideout is coming off a career year in Arizona, where he caught 32 passes for 359 yards and one touchdown.
Byrd posted the best single-game numbers of his career — six receptions on six targets for 86 yards — in a home win over the Browns. He dropped one pass all year.
Byrd spent the first three seasons of his career with the Panthers. He totaled 44 catches for 488 yards and two scores in Carolina. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound speedster entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2015.
He ran a 4.28 in a 40-yard dash run on grass at his Pro Day.
According to Pro Football Focus, Byrd spent most of his time out wide with the Cardinals. He took fewer than 10% of his snaps in the slot. Byrd is a deep threat who could provide a new dynamic to a Patriots offense in need some more explosiveness.
On Day 1, he should step into the Pats’ locker room as their new fastest player.
