Patriots sign former Cardinals tight end Troy Niklas to a 1-year deal
The Patriots added some depth at tight end.

Photo by Norm Hall/Getty ImagesThe New England Patriots added some depth to the tight end position by adding former Arizona Cardinals second rough pick Troy Niklas on a one-year deal, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The Patriots worked out Niklas earlier this week. The 6’6, 270 pound tight end was not very productive for the Cardinals, racking up just 203 yards and 3 touchdowns over his first four seasons. He suffered a season-ending ankle injury in his rookie season and missed time in 2016 with a wrist injury. Niklas won’t be a threat to take time away from Rob Gronkowski, but he could certainly challenge Dwayne Allen and Jacob Hollister on the back end of the roster. www.patspulpit.com/new-england-patriots-latest-breaking-news

Patriots sign former Ravens and Jaguars OL Luke BowankoNew England added some depth on the offensive line.By Rich HillPhoto by John Konstantaras/Getty ImagesThe New England Patriots added former Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Luke Bowanko, per ESPN’s Field Yates. The 6’6, 300 pound Bowanko is a former sixth-round pick that spent his first three seasons with the Jaguars before being traded to the Ravens. He has 15 starts in 39 games and has played all along the line. He suffered a series of injuries that limited him to seven games combined in 2015 and 2016, but he was relatively healthy in 2017 and played 90 snaps. The Patriots needed some depth on their offensive line and while Bowanko shouldn’t push either Joe Thuney or Shaq Mason for time on the field, he’ll provide solid competition to Matt Tobin, Ted Karras, and Cole Croston. www.patspulpit.com/2018/4/4/17200080/patriots-sign-former-ravens-and-jaguars-ol-luke-bowanko

Both depth picks ups. Nicklas was a real disappointment coming out of college...All he has to do is be better than Allen.

Patriots add Jordan Matthews to receiving corpsKaren Guregian Thursday, April 05, 2018Credit: The Associated PressJordan Matthews went on the free agency tour, meeting with Green Bay, Arizona, and Tennessee. But in the end, chose New England, as the former Bills wide receiver has agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Patriots, according to ESPN.com. Matthews was in Foxboro Monday for a visit. Given the trade of Brandin Cooks to the Rams, the Patriots were likely shopping for a reliable option to add to the wide receiver corps, and Matthews fits the profile. He’s a possession receiver, which falls in line with Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. Matthews, who mostly plays in the slot, was a former second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, but was traded to the Bills in August in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby. In a year he battled injuries, he played in just 10 games with the Bills, with seven starts, catching 25 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown. Statistically, it was an off year, after he’d amassed at least 67 catches and over 800 yards in each of his three years in Philadelphia. With Matthews in the fold, he joins Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Phillip Dorsett, Kenny Britt, Cordarelle Patterson, Riley McCarron and Cody Hollister on the depth chart. www.bostonherald.com/sports/patriots/the_blitz/2018/04/report_patriots_add_jordan_matthews_to_receiving_corps
