I'm really at a pass on this one. One of the two made some big mistakes last year. It would be nice to see them humbled a little and admit last year wasn't much of an improvement. I'm more concerned however on how next year plays out regardless of the extention. If they don't have a contender in two years both might likely be gone. Next year i might be a lot more critical of both but. hopefully a lot more supporting.

" If they don't have a contender in two years both might likely be gone"
I don't think that's true at all, the ownership group prizes stability, realizes how hard it is to build a winning team in the NBA, and by and large (most) fans are happy with the team's progress.
Given that both these guys are already on long term deals I don't know what the rush was to extend them, but ownership isn't going to extend them and then put them on the hot seat. Celtics fans aren't really like you and me, they are very patient and forgiving and mostly just want a team that plays hard and goes to the playoffs.

Nice "class act" move by ownership.

Signals a longer rebuild to me. The Celts might go younger this year.

Signals a longer rebuild to me. The Celts might go younger this year. Actually it was done to signal to free agents that the GM & Head Coach weren't going anywhere (despite all the college rumors on Stevens) and this organization is very stable at the top compared to many others that will be trying to lure free agents to sign with their teams. If anything, it signals intent to acquire free agents or other players by trade, letting them know ahead of time that all is well here.

Stability - Letting the FA's know the management and coaching team isn't going anywhere, that the "good young coach" will be here. It's true the franchise is in a cold northern city, but it still DOES have the most titles in NBA history, probably the most knowledgeable fan base and most supportive during the good time AND bad times and it's ready to explode behind a team going deep into the playoffs.

"Of course it for the free agents that's obvious."
I find it hard to believe that any free agent is going to say, "Well, with Brad Stevens now signed for six years instead of three years I'm definitely coming to Boston!"
I think ownership is coddling these guys a bit too much. Ainge has a lot to prove, his only championship wouldn't have been possible without a great assist from Kevin McHale. Stevens meanwhile is a very good coach but certainly hasn't proven he can develop young talent.
There is something to be said for asking your management and coaching team to prove it rather than giving them a blank check.
Three years for each of them is a more than sufficient vote of confidence. It concerns me that this ownership group values stability over accountability.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate this move but I hardly see it as some kind of free agent bonanza. One terrible Boston blizzard would hurt recruiting more than this would help.
If Ainge wants to help recruiting he can go out and get an excellent player that others will want to join.

you give stevens young guys he can build with that..it's going to take a little longer...but that's what he does teach young guy's and he's good at it...remember butler? but you give him a couple of all-stars watch out...he would do damage.

"you give stevens young guys he can build with that..it's going to take a little longer...but that's what he does teach young guy's and he's good at it"
He did a terrible job developing Rozier this year. Instead he gave the minutes to veterans like Turner because Stevens wants to win games. If you want to develop young players you have to be willing to lose games sometimes, it's that simple. Finally Stevens was forced to play Rozier in the very send of season and playoffs due to injuries and Rozier showed some flashes for sure, but he hadn't had much playing time at all during the year. The same is true of a couple other young guys including Hunter and Mickey. None of those guys got nearly enough minutes.
That's because Stevens is more interested in winning now than developing young talent, so guys with lower ceilings but less likely to make mistakes got the minutes. To be fair he is doing whatever Ainge is green lighting so it's not just on Stevens, it's on Ainge.
It doesn't matter what Stevens did at Butler. I'm sure he can develop young guys but it's just not a priority. It could come back to bite us as it once did with Billups.
"but you give him a couple of all-stars watch out...he would do damage."
True - he'd much rather work with established players and win, that's what he's built for. That said I don't believe coaches are nearly as important in the NBA as all star talent. Look at Cleveland, in the NBA finals and lebron is basically their coach.
Don't get me wrong I'm happy with Stevens I think he's a top ten NBA coach and could eventually be top three, but I don't see why he gets a blank check just yet.

I have nothing negative to say about the Grousbeck family and am thankful for their tireless contributions and continued investments in the team.

I'm sure the appearance of stability to attract free-agents was one, but not the only, reason. Have you guys ever heard Wyc on Sports Hub / Weei? He gets personally offended when callers try to put Ainge on the hot seat. Wyc and Ainge are super tight. The man love is even a bit nauseating (mostly kidding).
Wyc loves Ainge, and obviously Stevens has earned his extension. If Stevens was available , there would be 25 interested teams.

Exactly. Stevens will probably be a great coach one day . Not playing the rookies more especially Rozier last year was a big mistake. This isn't Butler and the collage game the playoffs proved he has a way to go yet.

I don't fully embrace the pervasive belief that there is an extremely strong primary correlation between development and court time. I think some of the stats are skewed because of a strong secondary correlation to talent. If a player is very good, he will get a lot of court time and develop quickly. But he's not necessarily developing quickly because of the court time.
That being said, I do think that it would be naiive to think that Stevens wouldnt have a learning curve / adjustment period like most (if not all) college coaches do when they hop over.

Fair statement Drewski. I still wanna see the rookies play more next year .Rozier did prove he could play after finally getting some time. Stevens seems more concerned about putting up 50 wins than developing young players in my opinion last year. His failure to admit such makes me doubt his mind set. I'm quite sure things will be different next year. Another exit in the first round will find more folks doubting his strategy next year.

Love how we all know more than the coach about who should be playing........etc. Is is possible that Rozier, Hunter and Mickey were not ready to contribute, and couldn't beat out Thomas, Bradley, Turner, Smart, Oly, Sully and Johnson.......is that even possible?? Geesh!!

I suppose some folks missed seeing Rozier play in the playoffs. Most all opinions on her were very positive especially since he had seen little playing time. Hunter and Micky might be another story they played even less. We done so well without them i suppose Stevens was right. Beat those Hawks to death

The last two statements by both of you guys have great elements of truth in them...and it means the talent level must be increased across the board if the rookies were not good enough to warrant playing time throughout the year. I think this is something we've known all year. Rozier had some good moments during the playoffs and some of the vets (Fatburger Sully, Oly) looked awful, like they regressed horribly, albeit for vastly different reasons. There will have to be more roster juggling in the next season or two at least. There are far too many holes everywhere on the team before they can move forward into serious contention
