Raptors Will Waive Spencer Dinwiddieby Luke AdamsThe Raptors don’t intend to keep veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie on their roster after acquiring him from Brooklyn. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link), Toronto will waive Dinwiddie before he plays in a game for Toronto. Dinwiddie is on an expiring contract and has a $1.5MM bonus in his contract if he appears in 50 games. He’s at 48 games now, so he would’ve locked that bonus in with two more appearances and the Raptors would prefer not to be on the hook for that money, since the point guard isn’t in their future plans. The deal that sent Dennis Schröder and Thaddeus Young was about creating more cap flexibility for the 2024 offseason by moving off of Schröder’s multiyear deal. It has been a down year so far for Dinwiddie, who averaged just 12.6 points per game on .391/.320/.781 in 48 games (all starts) for Brooklyn while logging 30.7 minutes per night. Those shooting percentages are well below his career rates and the scoring average is his lowest in a healthy season since he averaged 12.6 PPG in 2017/18. Still, he’s likely to generate plenty of interest on the buyout market, with the Lakers among the teams that might be a fit. Because Dinwiddie’s base salary of $18.9MM exceeds the mid-level exception, he’ll be ineligible to sign with the Celtics, Nuggets, Warriors, Clippers, Heat, Bucks, and Suns, whose team salaries are above the tax apron. He also won’t be permitted to rejoin the Nets. www.hoopsrumors.com/2024/02/raptors-will-waive-spencer-dinwiddie.html

C's still have one roster spot open for a Buyout candidate and assuming they used $2.2MM of the TPE to acquire Springer then they have $4MM left for use on that Buyout. If that doesn't happen then that 15th roster spot will most likely be filled with Queta. Of the end of bench depth, just two remain of the original four - here still are Brissett & Mykhailiuk and gone are Banton & Stevens. Queta holds a 2-way along with Peterson & Davison.
Here are some potential Buyout candidates per masslive.com : Ignore their contract $ as after a buyout these guys will most likely all sign for Vet Minimum. If plucked from the waiver wire before clearing then an acquiring team would be responsible for the balance of their existing contract before the buyout letting the prior team off the hook.
Note that some of these players haven’t been bought out yet but could be as those negotiations will continue in the coming days. Here are six names who could be interesting for the Celtics:
Otto Porter Jr., Jazz, $6.3 million
Porter was linked to the Celtics on the trade market. But he was included in the Kelly Olynyk deal, going from the Raptors to Jazz. It’s unclear whether Danny Ainge will buy Porter out, but the wing could fit for the Celtics in the buyout market. Porter has had his injury issues, but he’s shot nearly 40% from 3 in his career and is a proven playoff performer. For a depth player, there are certainly positives.
Cedi Osman, Spurs, $6.7 million
Osman has had a solid season for the Spurs coming off the bench, averaging 7.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in his 51 games (one start). Notably, he’s also hit 37.3% of his 3-pointers. It’s no guarantee the Spurs buy out the wing, but he’d be a solid addition for any playoff contender as a depth piece. Osman also plays in front of some young players in San Antonio, so they could give him a chance to find a new team to free up minutes.
Danuel House Jr., Pistons, $4.3 million
House was traded from the Pistons to the 76ers on Thursday, and he’s already been waived by the Pistons. So he’s a candidate in terms of availability, though the team could let the dust settle after the deadline to see which names pop up. The 6-foot-6 wing averaged 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 34 games (four starts) for the Sixers before he was traded.
Troy Brown Jr., Pistons, $4 million
The swingman was sent to the Pistons at the trade deadline as part of a deal for point guard Monte Morris. The Pistons have a bit of a roster crunch so it’s unclear at this point if the team plans on holding onto the veteran wing or cuts loose other members of the roster after bringing aboard several players above the maximum 15 at the trade deadline. The 24-year-old appeared in 37 games for Minnesota this year, averaging 4.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Given his youth, it’s likely he would want a bigger role than Boston could offer.
Thaddeus Young, Nets, $8 million (CONFIRMED BY NETS)
The power forward is heading back to the Nets after being included in a deal with Dennis Schroder in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie. Young has played spot minutes for the Raptors this year over 23 games, averaging 5.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. The Nets are still in the hunt for a play-in tournament spot but they could let the 35-year-old try to find a better chance at a title if he isn’t getting consistent minutes there. Young hasn’t made it past the second round of the playoffs in his 16-year career.
Robin Lopez, Kings, $2.5 million
The need for a true center went down a bit for the Celtics after acquiring Xavier Tillman on Wednesday. However, bringing aboard Lopez could bring some extra fun to a potential Celtics-Bucks playoff matchup after Milwaukee salary dumped the big man on Thursday to the Kings. Sacramento plans on waiving him per multiple reports. The 35-year-old is only averaging 1.1 points per game in 16 appearances this year so Neemias Queta is probably a better candidate for this spot than the 15-year veteran.

Here's a good one: Pacers acquire Cory Joseph ($2MM), $5.8MM in cash as well as CHA 2025 2nd RDP (top 55 protected) from the Warriors for the worse of their 3 2nd RDPs in 2024 (likely the Bucks or Cavs pick originally) and will waive him once the deal is completed ... So in essence, that hoop jump to sell the worse of their 3 2nd rd picks this year for $3.8MM.

Off Topic: Knicks’ Anunoby Out At Least Three Weeks After Elbow Surgery by Rory Maher Knicks forward OG Anunoby underwent right elbow surgery to remove a loose bone fragment and is out at least three weeks, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). The team confirmed the news (via Twitter), stating that Anunoby will be reevaluated in three weeks. According to Woj, the procedure is considered relatively minor. Anunoby tried to see if rest would heal the injury, but it was determined surgery was ultimately the best route to take to be fully healed ahead of the playoffs (Twitter link).

Here are four things to know about Springer:
1. Defense his calling card
Springer is still plenty young, so he’ll look to develop his guard skills going forward. He averaged 4.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 11.8 minutes per game for the Sixers. So he wasn’t getting too much time off the bench, and that’ll likely be the case in Boston, as well.
But it’s his defense that makes him an intriguing young player. He had a nice block on Jayson Tatum earlier, showing some flashes. While Springer won’t suddenly come to Boston and make a consistent on-court impact, the potential is certainly there for the 21-year-old. He’s also signed through next season, so the Celtics can have him for the long-term instead of just a one-year rental. And it never hurts to be a player who can lock down defensively, which is something the Celtics fanbase often appreciates.
2. Elite prospect coming out of high school
Springer was a five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American out of IMG Academy before heading to Tennessee for a one-and-done college career. There, he was named to the SEC All-Freshman team after a successful campaign, averaging 12.5 points per game. Part of the intrigue coming out was that he was a successful, tough defender as he’ll look to translate that into the league. He was picked 28th overall by the Sixers in the 2021 draft.
3. Successful G-League honors
While Springer wasn’t getting many minutes earlier in his career with the 76ers, he did show off some solid play with the G-League Delaware Blue Coats. Not only that, but he helped the team win the 2023 G-League championship. Springer was named the G-League Finals MVP after the Blue Coats swept the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In the two games, Springer combined to score 68 points on his way to the honor and the title.
4. Basketball ties
The Springer family has had plenty of success when it comes to the basketball world. Springer’s dad, Gary, was a McDonald’s All-American himself and was drafted by the Sixers in the 1984 draft. His older brothers also both played college ball. Notably, DeAndre’ Bembry, who has played in 296 NBA games, is cousins with Springer.

Spotrac confirms the Banton trade to Portland for a pick ... he's gone in a separate trade from the Springer deal.
Shooting definitely not Springer's strong suit ... I prefer Banton's length over this 6'4" frame but apparently he's a strong defender disrupting opponents with steals and deflections. May be more useful than Banton come POs.
oh shit. I remember him. Cant believe they traded him. He is good! not good, but can play some defense. Has played less than 500 minutes in 2 1/2 years since being a late first round pick. they best be able to turn him into a player, he makes $4M next season GUARANTEED.

only buy out players the Celtics could pick up using the TPE off waivers would be C. Jospeh and D. House.
also Owners are not going to want to pick anyone full salary when they can sign them for a pro-rated minimum deal (saving as much as $15M in salary and tax payments).
anyone else is a vet minimum only option. K. Hayes was one I thought might be worth a minimum deal, but they traded for Springer instead.
also we need to remember the new CBA means we cannot sign any by out players who's salary before the buy out was over $12.4M.
so we can't sign say M. Morris or Dinwiddie for instance.
House might be a solid wing vet to bring in, if they don't want to sign Queta for the 15th spot.

Morris or Dinwiddie for instance. House might be a solid wing vet to bring in, if they don't want to sign Queta for the 15th spot.
How about these guys?
1. Danilo Gallinari
The Celtics signed Gallinari in the 2022 offseason, but he never played for the franchise. The veteran forward tore his ACL and missed the entire season. Boston traded him in June 2023 as part of the deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics. Gallo was traded again in mid-January, which makes him eligible to sign with Boston if he gets bought out.
The 6’10 forward has barely missed a shot since joining the Pistons. He is averaging 10.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 rebounds in 15.8 minutes per game over five contests, while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 58.3 percent on his 3-point attempts. Gallo is a professional scorer who will get buckets.
He helped his team reach the playoffs in his last four healthy seasons, but the 35-year-old is still chasing his first championship. He would welcome a buyout and a chance to chase a championship. His $6.8 million expiring salary makes him free to sign with any team if he gets let go.
Will the Boston Celtics make a splash on the buyout market? They want to improve their roster and win a championship this season. Expect Brad Stevens and the front office to add if they believe the player helps them accomplish their goals.
2. Delon Wright
The Wizards are just starting a rebuild and have zero use for a 31-year-old point guard. He has struggled this season as his minutes and production have dipped. Wright is averaging 4.4 points, 2.8 assists, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 15.2 minutes per game. He is shooting just 38.6 percent from the field but could be a fantastic fit in Boston.
The Celtics have the best defensive backcourt in the NBA in Jrue Holiday and Derrick White. Wright would give them a rangy 6’5 guard to back them up capable of playing stout defense, hitting open shots, and making a few plays. Boston is worried about Payton Pritchard’s defense in the playoffs, but Wright holds his own and can defend multiple positions.
The 31-year-old has made five trips to the playoffs and is capable of giving his team 20 quality minutes every night. That is all Boston needs coming off the bench. Wright may not be a game-changer, but the Celtics do not need one. They have the best top six in the NBA. The franchise is searching for quality role players to enhance their top-end talent.
The Boston Celtics could search for a guard or another wing to round out their roster. A former player may be the best available option for the franchise.
3. Cedi Osman
The Celtics signed several wings this summer, but none of them have worked as planned. Boston would love to find a trusted option behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown capable of guarding multiple positions and sinking open shots. They do not need a star or starter just someone who is comfortable playing 20 minutes per game and standing out in their role.
Osman is a career 35.5 percent 3-point shooter with the size to guard two through four. The 6’7 wing was part of the Cavaliers playoff rotation last season and is in the middle of his prime. He is playing 18.1 minutes per game this season for the Spurs, but San Antonio is still rebuilding. They have zero reason to keep Osman.
The Celtics would love to find another wing for depth. Boston may have to mix and match in the playoffs, especially if they have to deal with an injury. Cedi Osman is a veteran capable of playing a role and helping his team win. He is not going to blow anyone away with his production, but Boston just needs a steady role player.
If the Celtics cannot convince him to come to Boston, they could pivot to secondary ball-handlers. Two role-playing guards could be available to boost the franchise.
4. Seth Curry
Curry was traded by the Mavericks to Charlotte in the P.J. Washington deal. The veteran guard is an elite shooter but struggled to find minutes this season. Dallas has Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in the backcourt, but Curry has proven he can make shots in the playoffs.
The 33-year-old signed a two-year $8 million contract with the Mavericks in the 2023 offseason, but the second season is non-guaranteed. The rebuilding Hornets have little use for a veteran backup guard, so Curry will likely be bought out.
The Celtics are searching for playoff options. Seth Curry’s 43.2 percent career 3-point percentage is the seventh-highest in NBA history. He shot over 50 percent from three in the 2021 and 2022 playoffs. The 6’1 guard will sink open shots and force the defense to guard him. Boston could use another shooter on the bench for when the games matter most.
Seth Curry has struggled to stay healthy and has defensive issues. He may not be the perfect fit or a piece of the nightly rotation, but the veteran can help in the right role and situation. Boston may opt for more size on the wing, but finding someone capable of making an impact on the buyout market won’t be easy.
5. Thaddeus Young
Young was out of the rotation to begin the season, but the Raptors traded Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, which opened up minutes for the veteran. He is averaging 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 21.5 minutes per game over his last 14 contests. He was traded to Brooklyn on deadline day, but the 35-year-old is a 6’8 forward with plenty of versatility.
Young is on an $8.0 million expiring contract, and the Nets are unlikely to make a run. The veteran could be quickly bought out to join a contender. He has played in the playoffs nine times in 16 years, but his team has never advanced beyond the second round. Young would love a shot at his first championship, and there is no better place to chase it than Boston.
The Celtics have been searching for a trusted forward capable of playing behind Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and new addition Xavier Tillman. Thaddeus Young allows Boston to go small if they choose in the playoffs. He could be an impactful addition, but Young is not the only player the Celtics will have their eyes on.
