I think it's admirable that Smart and Al, post-game, took the time to publicly mention "Joe's adjustments". Brian Windhorst reported that the players have been trying to convince Mazzulla to go to the double big lineup and he finally relented for Game 6. For me, that's not a good look. Smart even admitted the criticism of Joe is justified.
Also per Smart, the Celtics basically just run a couple of plays that have many different reads off those couple of plays. That means the players have to be in sync and make the right reads for the offense to be effective. I now see why sometimes our offense looks stagnant. I wonder what impact that has on JT getting off to these very slow starts.
Joe has done as good a job as can be expected but I really wonder if he's helping or hurting the success of this team.
IMO, with an experienced, veteran HC, this series would have been over in 5 games. I just hope his continued coaching inexperience doesn't cause us a championship this year.

And let's all hope that his learning curve is positive and very steep... out of absolute necessity.

It took three quarters for Tatum to show signs of life. I wish he had not said that he is one of the best. Instead he should go out there and play consistently and let the game speak for itself. Humbly but not humbly at all to be honest.

Like Smart said, the bright side of having Mazzulla is that it is forcing the starters to THINK the game more.
To know time and situation and optimal strategy.
Good things.

Talk of the town today: Smart's comment that Joe is getting killed and rightfully so.
Before game #6 Mazz kept talking about "team unity," "trusting one another," and "staying together." There was talk about a possible fight amongst the players and Joe trying to repair what caused it in Game #5. Media has shown us Horford (usually soft spoken publicly at least) on a couple of occasions last night in the huddle going off on the team ... right after Tatum fell asleep on Maxey who hit a wide open corner three. But now we've come to understand that the dissension was between the team and the HC! The players wanted Rob in game #5 and Joe refused. Mazz upset his players and Smart told us that Joe has been learning and the players have been "teaching" him. So before Game #6 Joe was preaching "unity" and started Rob as the players requested. Tatum, Smart & Al have all told us how pleased they are to have Rob playing Safety behind them. And the best part? IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The players are now running the team ... Not HC Mazzulla. As Dfries would say ... "Now you know the rest of the story."
Smart admits Joe Mazzulla deserved criticism before Game 6 adjustments

PHILADELPHIA — Joe Mazzulla had taken his fair share of criticism ahead of Game 6 as the Celtics rookie coach suffered through a number of strategic missteps that contributed to two straight losses in a second series with the 76ers.
In the midst of praising his head coach for a key Game 6 adjustment of inserting Robert Williams into the starting lineup for Derrick White, Marcus Smart acknowledged that the criticism Mazzulla had taken up to that point was warranted in a candid admission.
“I was ecstatic about it,” Smart said of the starting lineup change. “To be able to have Rob in there, he changes the game a lot. Being able to have a lob threat, a rim threat, to be able to protect the rim on the other end. He’s huge for us. And I was proud to have him on the court.
“And that just goes to show you Joe’s learning just like all of us. I know he’s been killed a lot, rightfully so. He needs to make some adjustments and he did that. And that’s all you can ask for. Just continue to be the best he can be. And it takes everybody. It’s a full team effort.”
Williams and Al Horford had played just one minute together with the starters in the entire series prior to Game 6 but the partnership played some of its defense of the year with Williams in the lineup. Boston allowed just 74 points per 100 possessions with Williams on the floor, helping them limit the Sixers to 86 points in the win.
“It made a tremendous difference,” Jaylen Brown said. “It don’t take a professional to see the difference that Rob makes. You put him similar in that role he played last year where he can trust his instincts, make plays, even him tipping the ball out on rebounds and stuff like that. I feel like Rob felt a lot more comfortable out there in that double big.”
“I was happy that that happened,” Al Horford added. “We just know the impact that Rob has. When Rob’s not in there, I feel like a lot falls on my shoulders. When he’s out there, I know that he’s got my back and I can be a little more aggressive, I can do different things.”
While making the surprising admission about Mazzulla, Smart made sure to praise his coach for the job he’s done all year and how they’ve helped him along the way.

coaches Nurse and Bud, both COY recipients, are on the sideline today. Mazz isn't. players love him. players respect him. he will improve. go out and get him coach Bud or Nurse to help on the sidelines this offseason. Mazz will learn, grow, and be in the upper echelon before you know it

As Dfries would say ... "Now you know the rest of the story." This HC has a lot to learn and it is pretty obvious to all, including the players.
A smart HC knows when/how to let the players "run" the team, not that Joe is a smart HC... but maybe he can learn management skills very quickly!
If I were a bett'n man, I'd say the chances were pretty slim... but how many times did you watch doc allow R9R to "run" the team? It always made me cringe when doc did so but the results were not awful to be sure.
It's good that the players want the coach to succeed... to their mutual benefit!

That's a good idea. I'm just not sure Brad would do it or one of them would accept at this point in the playoffs.
Brad and other professionals may see making a move like that as proof of a lack of confidence and undermining Mazz and any respect he has from the players he's coaching. If it were someone Mazz was close to then that might get green lighted by him but another vet assistant would be viewed as his replacement and could impact his decision making and the team negatively.
