Anticipating and getting moar casual concern by this C's team for dilemma (Hawks) after dilemma (Sixers) has run me through a melting pot of emotions - nail biting jitters to anger and after last night near insanity. Yes, I'm a "basket case" fearing elimination from the playoffs without even sniffing the ECF let alone another Finals and chance for Banner #18!
Part of those emotions I can blame on Mazzulla ... Watching & listening to him is like having a substitute teacher prepare one for the SAT's. Brad hired him under his watch as head coach and has faith in him but clearly he was given responsibility before being ready. How could Brad go all in for a chip with ownership's approval and then after making the additions needed rely on an unproven coach especially after losing key assistants? Clearly Mazz is "in too deep."
Nothing has been MOAR frustrating than watching Tatum start games like he just rolled out of bed and hasn't had his coffee yet! It's taking him until the 2nd quarter and in some cases the 3rd or 4th to find his energy, motivation, willpower or whatever it is that finally jump starts his game. Wyc needs to provide a defibrillator for each game to "kickstart his heart!"
After what happened last year, all we heard after that and all season long was how angered and motivated they were because of that experience. In other words they should be "hungry like the wolf" willing to put it all out there to survive and get back what they had slip through their grip last year. They are better equipped but need to find the heart/resolve to repeat and succeed now moar than ever.
If this team can't find it's heart, play smart with energy and resolve then it might be necessary to send them off to the hospital just like Dfries. Post the "visiting hours" and see who gets the least visitors then put them on the trade block because there will be changes! Whether Mazz takes the fall or a number of players, there will be upheaval and it could set us back a number of years unless Brad can right his wrongs quickly.

Celtics adjustments for Game 6 should start with Payton Pritchard
| Brian Robb
(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)
The Celtics entered this postseason with one of the deepest benches in the NBA on paper. Despite that, Joe Mazzulla has been hesitant to dive deeper into that group beyond three players for much of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the 76ers.
Outside of Sam Hauser getting a first half stint in Game 1, it’s been a tight 8-man rotation for the Celtics before garbage time most nights heading into Game 5.
That gameplan worked okay early in the series but has started to run into serious issues against the 76ers over the past two games. Grant Williams has scored two points total over 43 minutes since Game 3. Robert Williams is only useful in non-Joel Embiid as he becomes an easy target in the pick-and-roll and defending against Sixers perimeter shooters. Meanwhile, Malcolm Brogdon is starting to be targeted defensively by the 76ers more often, becoming Boston’s clear weak link for guards like James Harden and Tyrese Maxey to go after.
One clear way to do that is inserting another creator into the fold in Payton Pritchard. The third-year guard got a chance at the end of the third quarter and finished with six points in eight minutes in a mix of meaningful minutes and garbage time. That and some fourth quarter minutes in a Game 2 blowout is all the opportunity he’s seen in this series for time but for a Boston offense that has stumbled throughout the last two games in large stretches, he provides an imperfect solution to some of the team’s woes.
“I trust him,” Mazzulla said after Game 5 of Pritchard’s minutes. “Thought we needed a little bit of a boost, a little bit of a different feel, and I thought he gave us some good minutes.”
With Joel Embiid returning to form from a defensive rim protection standpoint, the way the Celtics are going to come back and win this series starts with 3-point shooting. Pritchard as a passer and shooter has the skillset to punish the Sixers for their drop coverage and junk zone defenses. He has his flaws defensively (size mainly) but if the Sixers continue to stay smaller, they don’t have many players to punish him beyond Embiid. Pritchard is also better positioned to give useful ball pressure defensively to Maxey and Harden compared to Brogdon.
Ultimately, the Celtics would have another wing that Joe Mazzulla trusts to throw into this matchup but that did not happen at the trade deadline. Sam Hauser is a clear option from a shooting standpoint but Pritchard is the more playoff proven commodity at this point and provides more offensive versatility.
With the team’s season on the line, Mazzulla needs to have a short leash on his talent in Game 6 if they aren’t willing and efficient shooters. Ideally, Marcus Smart, Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon are those guys in a perfect world but White was not a willing shooter in Game 5 (0-of-2 from deep in 34 minutes). Brogdon’s offense in Game 5 (3-of-9 shooting) did not make up for his lack of defense either.
With no margin for error on Thursday night, it’s on Mazzulla to figure out his best option on that specific night. He can’t wait for guys to shoot out of slumps or be timid. For that reason, Pritchard needs to be part of that equation and in the rotation to see if he can help optimize a Celtics offense that should be this team’s strength.
It’s far from guaranteed to help the Celtics bounce back in Game 6 but it’s a gamble worth making.
Admin Comment: It wreaks of desperation - having to go to Payton in Game 5 and again in Game 6 after ignoring him all season. That said, desperate times call for desperate measures and if the Sixers continue to play small using House, Melton & Niang along with Maxey & Harden then we need to add quickness/shooting/defense to cover those additional perimeter threats. Rob has been rendered useless and while Al can defend the rim and set up plays from the high post he's no longer effective if his 3 isn't falling and he becomes another Smart trying to spread the court with no teeth. Doc has picked on Brogdon and Smart so Mazz needs to counter that!

Gotta find their fight: Takeaways from Celtics-76ers Game 5 Boston’s season is on the brink as the Sixers can close back home in Philadelphia By Keith P Smith
This version of the Takeaways was started four different times. Each felt off, which is sort of fitting, given the Boston Celtics Game 5 performance against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Now, much like the Celtics themselves, it feels like this version is going to be flat, asking a lot of questions and waiting on answers that aren’t going to come.
At this point of the season, and this team’s arc, it’s unfathomable how they can admittedly play a playoff game with no energy. Yet here we are. And this isn’t one of those “feeling” things either. Joe Mazzulla and multiple players said the direct words themselves following the game.
The weird thing is that the crowd could tell right from tip-off. That was one of the worst home crowds the Celtics have played in front of in a long time. There was no life, and the team gave them no reason to stand and cheer. Most of the game was played with the uneasy tension of sitting outside of the principal’s office when you knew you were in trouble, but they just have[n't] told you how much trouble yet.
This situation isn’t different in terms of the series standings than last year’s second round matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Celtics are down 3-2 and headed on the road. The Sixers can close it out and exorcise some playoff demons at home in Philadelphia.
Last year, Boston put together a big Game 6 in Milwaukee, behind an all-time performance from Jayson Tatum. Then Game 7 was a blowout back in Boston. So, we’ve all been here before.
Yet, this doesn’t feel the same. Even down, that team had an edge and a feeling about them that this particular group just doesn’t have. Some of that is the difference from Ime Udoka to Joe Mazzulla, but that’s just a part of it. The players aren’t playing the same way either, and it’s not all just motivation, or lack thereof, from the sidelines.
This group has had a hangdog feel about them since about the quarter-mark of the season. The play has been uneven, and the motivation, effort and energy all come and go. Thus far, they’ve been able to pull it together when needed and, boy, do they need to now.
Keeping it on the court, this team has slipped significantly defensively from a year ago. It’s not just the numbers, as defense has slipped all across the league this season. But last year’s team controlled the game on the defensive end. They played with an intimidating ferociousness.
This group just doesn’t have it that persona.
By the end of the 2022 NBA Finals, it was clear the Celtics needed to get better on offense. But the moves made (in additions and lineup/scheme changes), took away some of what made Boston special.
It’s not that Malcolm Brogdon or Derrick White are bad players. Not even close. But having both of them made the team a little guard-heavy. That, combined with Rob Williams’ continued absences, saw Mazzulla go to more one-big lineups. In order to play their best eight players, there just aren’t a lot of minutes for double-big groups to be on the floor.
The offense got better. But it hasn’t gotten enough better to offset the slip defensively. And despite being the top defensive rebounding team in the NBA in the regular season, the Celtics have struggled mightily on the boards in the playoffs. They just aren’t the same as a year ago.
Sometimes when you plug one hole, which adding Brogdon and a full season of White have done, you take away from what made you special in the first place.
But it’s more than that.
By the end of the regular season, last year’s Celtics played with an edge and togetherness that made them tougher than their opponents. They knocked you down and relished it. If you knocked a Celtic down, four other Celtics shoved you aside to pick up their teammate.
In the fourth quarter of Game 5, the Celtics were down 14 with 9:16 left. Not ideal, but far from finished. On this play, Philadelphia put Boston in the bonus for the rest of the way. There should have been some life and some energy. Instead, this happened:
Jaylen Brown went down pretty hard there. Instead of four Celtics barging in to pick him up, everyone just stopped, before a couple of Boston players slowly made their way over to get Brown to his feet.
It was one play, but that’s sort of how it’s been for months now. That edge, that snarling ferocity, that joy in taking away an opponent’s life one play at a time, they just aren’t there anymore.
The season isn’t over, but it’s teetering. The Celtics can still pull it back, but in order to do that, they need to become those Celtics again. There can be no low-energy start. There can be no passive play. If you’re going to go down, go down fighting. That’s all we can ask for.

has anyone noticed how most of experienced NBA coaches have a go to rotation and then playoff comes they used that rotation steadily?? Now, has anyone noticed how Mazzullas rotation during the playoffs has been different than what his usual regular season's one?? That right away tells me he is lost. What A gong show.

Re: Jayson Tatum:
Tatum's line is deceptive cuz he was just 11-27 overall and 3-11 on threes. He got 11 of his 36pts from the FT line.
An inefficient game that he ghosted until the 2nd Qtr.
Sure he scored in Q4 as he always does ... it's as if a beacon goes off in his head and says "time to go to work" yet everyone else is already throwing in the towel and the opponent is ready to clear their bench. In other words, bunches of his points come when it doesn't matter so there's really nothing to be proud of and certainly no reason to pump him up as a Superstar.
There are signs that he's coming around (shooting wise after a few bad games) so let's see if he can re-establish himself as the best baller on the court come Thursday. If not I too may start posting potential trades involving Tatum ...

Game 6: 3 things to watch The Boston Celtics need a win to keep their season alive. By AdamTaylorNBA
The Boston Celtics have every reason to come out on Thursday night and go scorched-earth mode on the Philadelphia 76ers. Quite frankly, anything less than a ‘gimme your lunch money’ performance could see their season being ended far too soon.
As such, we need to see a top-tier performance from the Celtics so that they can tie their series at 3-3 and force a game 7 in front of their hometown crowd at the TD Garden. Let’s dive into the 3 things to watch out for in game 6.
I) Both of the Jays, all of the time
At different times throughout Boston’s series against the 76ers, one of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown has gone missing. Be it poor shooting performances, a lack of shot attempts, or simply not being featured within the offense. Yet, if the Celtics are going to stand a chance of making it out of Philadelphia with their season still alive, Joe Mazzulla needs to find ways to keep both of his All-NBA wings involved in the game.
There can’t be a string of possessions where Brown is in the weakside corner, watching on like a spectator. Or where Jayson Tatum is being forced into off-the-dribble threes, which clearly aren’t his bread-and-butter. Instead, we need to see both of these elite talents being featured within the offense, either as an initiator, screener, cutter, or scorer.
There’s no point in having two elite players on the roster if they’re not going to be utilized to their full potential, especially in a win-or-go-home situation. And especially when the 76ers do nothing but feature their top-two guys on offense. Fight fire, with fire.
II) Can Al Horford bounce back?
In the fourth quarter of game four, Al Horford locked up Joel Embiid so bad he started to question his decision to play basketball, and if he didn’t, he should have. Yet, throughout game 5, Horford couldn’t buy a bucket, especially from the perimeter, and yes, that seriously hindered the Celtics' five-out offensive game plan.
So, now the question is, can Horford bounce back from a poor outing and help keep Embiid under wraps once more? Because, let's face it, Horford is an integral part of the Celtics rotation, and when he plays at a high level, the rest of the roster usually follows suit. I’m not asking for a 20 and 10 night, but rather, an Al Horford performance, you know, where he locks up his man, chips in with timely buckets, blocks shots, and helps box out on the glass.
If Horford can have one of those ‘age-less Al nights’ the Celtics will be in a good spot to snatch a win and keep their series alive. After all, if anyone wants to get another crack at the NBA finals, it’s Horford.
Adjustments: Making them, negating them, and faking them
Those were the words of NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg on Wednesday, May 10, and to be honest, they were a well-articulated version of what most of us were thinking. Yet, we didn’t always feel this way about Joe Mazzulla. In fact, it feels like he’s becoming the scapegoat for issues that have blighted the Celtics for multiple years now. I, too, am guilty of this.
However, Mazzulla does need to step up and be counted, especially in a game of this magnitude. That starts with making some adjustments on both ends of the court and putting his players in a position to succeed. From them, Mazzulla will need to manage the game, both in terms of tempo and in on-the-fly adjustments to counteract whatever Doc Rivers has up his sleeve.
Let’s not forget Rivers isn’t known as an X’s and O’s mastermind, so Mazzulla should be more than up to the challenge of playing the game within the game.
Final thoughts
The Celtics need a win in game 6. No. They HAVE to win. Anything less will result in early vacations across the board and millions of disenchanted fans around the globe. The Celtics have owned the Sixers in playoff matchups in recent years, and now is the time to do it again. I have faith. But game 6 on the road, against one your most fierce rivals, is not going to be an easy game to win, regardless of whats on the line.

They probab want to play tougher, and playing Rob at the jump to set a physical tone. I expect Marcus to be full Marcus, probably hurt himself, and play through it. Its prob fair to worry that it may be a liability (Marcus is sometimes). But to me, it goes hand in hand with wanting to win the physical and mental side of things.
I dont hate that idea, but Im worried about Maxey and Harden popping floaters from just inside the free throw line on RWill looking confused because he doesnt know whether to step forward or back. So he gets caught in no mans land (pulls a Kanter).
Theyre also one man short on perimeter defense. Really 1.5 man short because Als age gives him a .5 at guarding the perimeter, and Rwill gives you a 0 (other than fouls) on perimeter D.
Offensively, I expect them to drive and dish w Jaylen and Brogdon primarily. They do it a lot (and then sometimes mysteriously just stop, when its working). W Rob out there, brings the lob in as an option, but makes it harder for the dribble-driver to get to the hoop(brings the opposing C in close), and reduces your options at the perimeter.
I can live with it offensively. Very worried defensively. But they can and may sub out from the 2 big lineup early.

The double-bigs has been our most successful starting lineup.
The disadvantage will be our guards (Smart & Brown) against theirs (Harden & Maxey). If Smart can't stay in front of his man or gets cooked on P&R then Mazz may have to try Pritchard for Smart. Brogdon won't due as he's been picked on constantly in the P&R and failed. He's a scorer off the bench or when you want 5-Out.
No Rebounds - No Rings ... With added size in front court with Tatum, Horford & Rob we should give up fewer ORs and be able to start more fast breaks. Just keep TOVs to a minimum and you win this game. Oh and run, run, run ... Joel will tire out and be useless in Q4 if you make him run and defend their rim!
