The Celtics have the first details of their schedule with the season creeping close. The NBA unveiled its opening-week games Tuesday, along with its annual Christmas day games. The league honors its 75th anniversary this season, meaning there should be plenty of logos and events to mark the event.
Boston opens its season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 on ESPN, taking on the rival New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden. It’ll be a rivalry matchup but also have some extra storylines with Kemba Walker back with his hometown team after being traded from Boston.
The Christmas game should also get a lot of eyeballs as the Celtics travel to face the reigning champion Bucks in Milwaukee at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. It should draw major attention in the middle of the holiday, similar to when the C’s and Bucks met in their season opener last year.
The league gets back to a normal regular season schedule after the pandemic disrupted the past two seasons. After Summer League concludes Tuesday, the NBA goes into hibernation mode before training camp Sept. 28.
The Celtics are hoping a revamped roster will boost them higher up the standings after a disappointing .500 campaign in 2020-21. There haven’t been major upgrades, but another season of development for All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will be an important development.
The complete game schedule, along with the national broadcast NBA schedule, will be announced at 3 p.m. Friday.
