washingtonpost.com The Patriots are suddenly in need of a QB. What are their options?By Mark Maske
The New England Patriots and Coach Bill Belichick suddenly found themselves in need of a quarterback Tuesday, after Tom Brady informed owner Robert Kraft during a meeting Monday night that he would be leaving the team after two decades and six Super Bowl titles. Potential trade target Andy Dalton was among the candidates being mentioned by people in and around the league. But Belichick and the Patriots can be unpredictable at times, and few seemed to have a firm grasp on what the team’s immediate post-Brady plan might be. Nick Foles, the former Super Bowl MVP for the Philadelphia Eagles, could be available in a trade after one unsuccessful season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they had given Cam Newton permission to seek a trade. Free agent options include Philip Rivers and Jameis Winston. The Patriots have a young quarterback in Jarrett Stidham, taken in the fourth round of last year’s NFL draft. But he had only four regular season passing attempts as a rookie, and it’s questionable that Belichick would go into the season counting on the second-year pro to be the starter. Free agent Teddy Bridgewater had been linked in speculation to the Patriots. But he was finalizing a deal Tuesday to sign with the Panthers, according to a person familiar with those negotiations, and succeed Newton in Carolina. Bridgewater had success last season as a fill-in starter for the New Orleans Saints while Drew Brees was sidelined by a thumb injury. It appears that either Dalton or Foles could be had on the trade market. Dalton’s starting job in Cincinnati is likely to be given to Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner from LSU and presumptive top overall choice in next month’s NFL draft by the Bengals. The Jaguars could move on from Foles -- who is one season into a four-year, $88 million contract signed last offseason as a free agent -- and turn things over fully to youngster Gardner Minshew. But Dalton never has won a postseason game and Foles has had an inconsistent NFL career that, until his revival in Philadelphia, had him bordering on journeyman status. Belichick would have to trust that he and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could get the best out of either, while retooling an offense that lacked playmakers around Brady last season. The Patriots are coming off a first-round playoff defeat to the Tennessee Titans. Newton is a former league MVP who once took the Panthers to a Super Bowl. But he has had shoulder and foot injuries, leaving some to wonder whether he will be able to regain star status. Rivers has said his farewells to the Los Angeles Chargers but could be closing in on a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. He has never reached a Super Bowl and is coming off a 20-interception season for the Chargers. Winston topped 5,100 passing yards and had 33 touchdown passes for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season but also threw 30 interceptions. The only certainty as of midday Tuesday, it seemed, was that whichever quarterback the Patriots choose will have a rather daunting task in succeeding an all-time great — perhaps the all-time great — in New England.

Bobby Orr the hocky player, or benjamin orr who left the cars? I loved the Cars, but I meant Bobby Orr. His crooked agent sent him to the Black Hawks, saying the Bruins didn't give him an offer.............when they did!!
Didn't they offer him a future ownership position in the team that his agent didn't convey to him?

washingtonpost.com Meet Jarrett Stidham, Tom Brady’s possible successor. He’s already on the quarterback’s diet. Cindy Boren
Could a No. 133 draft pick be the ideal replacement for the 199th?
With Tom Brady all but assured of moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots will be starting someone other than No. 12, the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL draft, at the position. At the moment, that new starter will be No. 4, Jarrett Stidham, although the team may take a look at other options, such as Jameis Winston, Cam Newton or Andy Dalton, for instance.
For now, though, Stidham is the next man up.
Here’s some of what we know about Stidham, who was Brady’s backup last season.
Stidham will turn 24 in August, the month in which Brady will turn 43.
The 133rd pick of the 2019 NFL draft, Stidham spent his rookie season backing up Brady, just as Brady started his career on the bench watching Drew Bledsoe.
Stidham stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds (Brady comes in at 6-4, 225).
Born in Kentucky, Stidham attended high school in Stephenville, Tex., and committed to Texas Tech before changing his mind and heading to Baylor. He started three games and left when Art Briles was fired in 2016. He spent a semester at McLennan Community College in Waco, Tex., and didn’t play football, instead practicing with a local high school football team. Then he went to Auburn.
With the Tigers, he had victories over two teams ranked first in the College Football Playoff rankings, Georgia and Alabama, in an impressive three-week span during his redshirt sophomore year. Without a solid running game as a junior, he regressed. Still, in two seasons, he completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 5,952 yards and 36 touchdowns. At the college level, he passed for 7,217 yards and 48 touchdowns.
Although he threw only 13 interceptions in college, he had just seven touchdown passes, with five interceptions, in SEC games in 2018. He left college before his senior season.
In New England, Brady gave his backups little chance at game-day experience, save for the 2008 season that Brady missed because of a knee injury in the first quarter of the first game. Most recently, Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett went went 3-1 when they got the chance to step in for No. 12 when he served a four-game Deflategate suspension in 2016.
Stidham, like any young and hungry quarterback, came of age watching Brady.
“I’m a big Tom Brady fan. I don’t necessarily think I play a lot like him. I think I’m more of a … shoot, I don’t know, maybe like a Derek Carr kind of guy,” he told reporters at the Manning Passing Academy in June 2018. “Not as mobile as some guys but not immobile as much as a Tom Brady or somebody like that. But, honestly, I love watching Jimmy Garoppolo. I really love how he plays the game. He obviously learned a lot from Tom Brady. I really love watching him and how he plays.”
“I’ve read his book. I’m always trying to find something, whether it’s nutrition or stretching or just little things outside of actually throwing,” Stidham said in June 2018. “The biggest thing that I’ve worked on now that I’m healthy is nutrition, and I’ve been trying to really get more [flexible] in the hips and really kind of loosen everything up in that area. And I’ve been really focused on my nutrition and my eating habits because it goes a long way.”
Coach Bill Belichick’s assessment of his rookie?
“Jarrett is a smart kid,” he said in October. “He picks things up very quickly. He has a good grasp of the offense given where he is in his career. He’s handled everything we’ve thrown at him. In practice, he does a good job. He gets a lot of passes on our defense, and when he has the opportunity to get the offensive snaps he’s prepared and does a good job of those.”

I really wonder if they did try to entice the 49ers into to a straight up for Brady to get Jimmy G back. Like the 49ers, the Pats would be competitive with their good defense and a pretty good offensive line needed to protect Brady with his age and not a great mobile QB as Jimmy G is not the best mobile running QB either. If they did, I think the 49ers would have been the ones to have turned it down although not all 49er fans were in love with Jimmy G last 7 min of SB where he failed to get a 1st down in 3 attempts.

Boston Celtics rookies Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters can remain with the team for now, per Danny Ainge(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)By Tom Westerholm | twesterh@masslive.com
NBA teams have one interesting wrinkle which has been largely unexamined so far in most corners: Two-way contracts.
Players on two-way deals occupy a purgatory sort of space: They aren’t really in the G-League or the NBA. When the G-League suspended its season, it was a little unclear whether the two-way players were still employed by their big-league teams.
The Boston Celtics have an additional wrinkle: Their two-way players this season were essentially members of the roster, or at least they were much closer to the big-league club than most two-way players. Tacko Fall did countless community appearances and was one of the most famous players in the league. Internally, the Celtics were impressed with his performance with the Red Claws and see him as an NBA player going forward. Tremont Waters, meanwhile, made a case for himself as G-League MVP and showed real two-way potential that could turn him into a productive player on both ends at the next level.
“I think their status is that they’re still with (us), and until we have further notice on what the league is going to rule on all that," Danny Ainge said on a conference call with reporters Wednesday. "But as of now they’re still part of us, and they still can be with us if the season resumes.”
If the season resumes, Fall and Waters will not be able to participate in the playoffs. But previous two-way players have worked out and traveled with the team during the postseason, which might be something Fall and Waters can do.
As a team, the Celtics are trying to stay together.
“We’re approaching this like we’re going to return to play and we’re going to be playing playoff basketball," Ainge said. "So we are staying in touch, we are having conference calls where we have guest speakers, motivational speakers who address all of our guys on Zoom. We are doing workouts with the coaches and with the strength coaches via Zoom and so forth. So we’re trying to do all we can. Some players are better than others at doing things on their own and doing extra work, and some players are more compliant than others, some are harder to reach than others, but for the most part, I’ve been impressed with how our players have bought in and the work that’s going on behind the scenes.”
