I posted in here last weekend that I didn’t think they’d turned any corner because every time we’ve said that theyve immediately gone straight into the tank. That’s exactly what they did again, losing is in their dna, and 2018 was an outlier.
I would go so far as to say that "losing is in the Sox DNA". That all changed, starting in 2004. The Sox have won 4 World Championships in 14 years. That's dynastic stuff, in today's free agency world of MLB.
But, there's no question that the Sox got fat and happy during the 2019 off season...and that some poor decisions by management greased the skids for a down year.
The 2019 team was seriously flawed, due primarily to a poor bullpen. The failure of health challenged Chris Sale should have been predicted, and guarded against. But instead, the team foolishly signed him to a lucrative extension...sticking themselves with another bad contract. Pricey's immaturity has marred what appeared to be a fine season for him. Rick Porcello has been a right-handed Drew Pomerantz this season. Holes at first and second base were never filled.
So...the Sox, 10 games behind the Yankees and several games behind several teams for a wild card spot, wisely chose not to mortgage their future for a quick fix on the trade market, at the trade deadline.
The sad thing is that, even with all of the problems discussed above, this team has enough talent to be a playoff team. But, they don't seem to have the heart or the desire to get it done this season.
In other words, to quote the Strother Martin character in the classic movie, "Cool Hand Luke"...
"What we have here is a failure to communicate"...and that's on manager Alex Cora. This 2019 Red Sox team needs a collective good swift kick in the ass.
In Cora's defense, due to the insane salaries and the guaranteed contracts that the Sox players have today, it's difficult to effectively "communicate".
