Donaldson went to AAA to rehab?. Hit a grand slam? Im confused
New Cleveland Indians 3B Josh Donaldson hits grand slam in Columbus Clippers debut Three days after being acquired by the Cleveland Indians from the Toronto Blue Jays, Josh Donaldson began his rehab assignment with the Columbus Clippers. Author: Ben Axelrod
That didn't take long.
Hours after being placed on the 10-day disabled list by the Cleveland Indians, newly acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson began his rehab assignment with the Columbus Clippers. And in his second at-bat with his new franchise's Triple-A affiliate, the former MVP showed what he's capable of providing in Cleveland, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning of the Clippers' Labor Day matchup with the Toledo Mud Hens.
The Indians acquired Donaldson on Friday in exchange for cash considerations and a player to be named later. Injuries have limited the 3-time All-Star to just 36 games this season with his last appearance coming on May 28.
Over the course of his eight-year career, the 32-year-old has compiled a .275 batting average, 179 home runs and 544 runs batted in. In 2015, he earned American League MVP honors while batting .284 with 37 home runs and 99 RBIs.
With the addition of Donaldson, the Indians are expected to slide current MVP candidate Jose Ramirez back to second base and Jason Kipnis to the outfield. With his DL stint made retroactive to Sept. 1, Donaldson will be eligible to join Cleveland on Sept. 11, when the Indians are scheduled to face the Tampa Bay Rays.
Donaldson thinks he's close to being able to play
The Cleveland Indians knew what they were getting when they traded for Josh Donaldson — a former MVP who could help them reach the World Series. They just don't know when they'll be getting him on the field.
Donaldson doesn't, either, but he said Sunday he's close to being healthy enough to return. Acquired late Friday in a trade with Toronto, he has played in only 36 games because of shoulder and calf issues.
"It's been difficult," he said before Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. "If I was writing a book it's not how I would have wanted it to go, but hopefully it has a happy ending."
Donaldson took several rounds of batting practice, ran the bases and did agility drills Sunday.
"I'm excited because my body's come to the point now where I feel very much comfortable in going out there and playing — and not just playing at an ordinary level — but at a very high level as well," he said.
