Joe Mazzulla is clueless. He'll say whatever he needs to say to explain away that performance.
There is no way this game should have been expected to be one of the hardest of the year. If he truly felt that he would have had us better prepared to start the game.
How could he like how we responded? We responded horribly. After getting the lead, had we gone off in the 4th quarter and extended our lead and won going away, that's responding.
But after we "responded" in the 3rd quarter, we then let them keep things very tight throughout the 4th, even taking the lead several times during the quarter.
We averted an embarrassing disaster. And I'm gonna say it......Jayson Tatum is not a closer (he's a good dagger scorer but he's not a good "call game" scorer).

Conversely, can you imagine Joe saying after the Cs blow out an opponent.... "Hey we knew this game was going to be easy."

Well, I guess I am right on time with this repost from the last game thread...Hedley posted some good stuff on Mazzulla, and I have to say he is growing on me (Mazz, not Hedley...lol, ok, both of them)...

Last season your interactions with the media were sometimes tense. You’re a coach at the core, and if there was an option to stop speaking to us, I bet you’d take it. But you’ve seemed more at ease this year. What shifted? Joe Mazzulla: I think it came down to allowing myself to be emotionally vulnerable to the public. That was the hardest adjustment. It’s funny, I spent the first 17 years of my life being insecure and caring what people thought. Then post-college you spend time re-identifying yourself, being secure, and not being in the public eye, to the point where it’s like, ‘This is who I am. This is Joe Mazzulla. I don’t care what anybody says.’ Then overnight you go to being in the limelight, having to care what people think about you, having to understand how people view you. And that’s really hard, because I spent so much time working on not worrying about that. Last year I wasn’t ready to be emotionally vulnerable and my true self in the public eye. – via Boston Globe Coaching, Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics
Joe Mazzulla: And I never want to be a distraction to the players and organization. So I’m learning how to be emotionally open. I’m going to argue with you from time to time. It doesn’t mean I don’t like you or agree with what you’re saying. And, jokingly, I can’t understand why people give two [expletives] about me. I just don’t understand that. But they don’t care about me; they care about the role of the head coach of the Boston Celtics. So once I realized that I was like, ‘OK.’ – via Boston Globe Coaching, Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics
Obviously things are good right now, but what’s something about this season that concerns you? Joe Mazzulla: I don’t have any concerns. None? JM: Zero. Is that just how you approach coaching? Or did you have concerns last year and this is different? JM: I had concerns last year. Honestly, the concern was, ‘What if we don’t win this game today? What if we lose three of four?’ I had those concerns, understanding how you’re going to navigate that. But because of what we talked about earlier, the surrender to the result, I don’t have any concerns. Whatever we go through, we have to go through, however long that takes. I would regret more not being tested and going into a playoffs with zero adversity than being battle-tested and having an understanding of what we look like when things don’t go our way. – via Boston Globe Coaching, Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics
You’ve seemed to make a point of boosting up Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in press conferences after relatively quiet statistical games. What is behind that? Joe Mazzulla: It’s a little bit of changing the narrative of what value is and what success looks like. For such a long time in the NBA, value is how many shots did you get and how many points did you score? Very few times do you have guys like Jaylen and Jayson welcome two other superstars [in Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis] and then empower Derrick [White], who should be an All-Star. So what I really want to do is change the lens of what value and success look like. I think they’re way more valuable than they get credit for, because of their ability to be great teammates. And that’s not talked about or clicked on enough. The fact that one of those two guys could take 8-10 shots and keep playing hard on defense, to me that’s just as valuable as giving them the ball every time and scoring 40. – via Boston Globe Joe Mazzulla, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Boston Celtics

Once we got back into it though, I was all about chalking up one more win...

Once we got back into it though, I was all about chalking up one more win... The Celtics that I expected to see was the team that, once we got back into it, went ahead and dispatched of this significantly less-talented team. We continued to get beat on the boards. We continued to launch up bad 3-pointers. And I don't buy the idea that this is the Piston's championship game. The Pistons came out playing like they've played all season long. The problem is that WE DIDN'T. This isn't about getting someone's best shot. It's alll about how we have to play. Detroit got every rebound and it showed. Hopefully tonight, with no pressure of streaks, we will perform better against TOR. Oh, wait, who will sit out this one? Definitely Horford, but may be Porzingis? Who knows?

I took the 17 pts Zinger doesn't play as well when Brown isn't on the court i've noticed. Didn't buy one single Christmas present so i dropped 1k vs my usual 200.. I don't expect a loss however..... Dang, good bet!...

This team when they arent running and moving, they become the same pathetic team as last year. And I am sorry, I keep going back to Tatum but he is lazy. Still gets good numbers but he is lazy and his shot selection is horrid. He kills the momentum each time. Mazulla still clueless with his rotations. Why didnt he inserted some toughness with Brisset or Stevens is beyond me.
I just see two totally different lineups. When brown is in and tatum is out, they want to run and play transition offence. The ball moves and the offence flows. Things get halted with the other lineup. No Brown yesterday, we got a slow non flowing team. Tatum needs to trust more his teammates and that includes Porzingis.
What is being said? I bet you nothing. Mazullas approach is, let the guys figure it out.

Well, I took a call from my son and watched as we talked the C's go down by 20! As we closed the call, the C's had rallied back to within 7 and shortly after tied it. It was a trap game and hat tip to C's for saving face and getting a win rather than the embarrassment of being the team to end the Piston losing streak. An honor that a 1st place team should avoid at all costs! Congrats to Dee, we got the win and Dee got the $ ... that's a good night! And you got to talk to your son! Make that a very good night! Taking the day off and checking out a big swell with my 35 year (visiting from northern Cali) and 11 year old sons...thinking we will just be watching the 35 year old...see you all on tonight's gamethread!...back to back games, kids...

I can't recall such an inept Celtic coach in my lifetime . Mazz is FOS and Tatum is not a closer . Tatum wants the MVP as much or more than a banner.

24 and 6, yeah let's fire Mazz! Brown has missed 2 games this season, we've won both! Our all time record without Brown is 55 and 30! Our all time record without Tatum is 15 and 19! Tatum is not a perfect player, neither is anyone else you can name! I'm not even sure Tatum is our best player anymore, Porzingis very well could be, but Tatum is no worse than our 2nd best! As for Mazz knowing this would be a difficult game for us, why wouldn't he know it would be difficult, hell I knew it would be difficult! Mazz and the Celtics have the best record in the league, I kinda like where we're at!!

I felt this game might be a challenge early coming off a successful west coast trip. But, once we got our ship righted, I felt we would pull away like we did against SAC, LAC and LAL and win comfortably. Nobody in their right mind would have thought this game, once we took the lead, would end up close and into OT (with us close to losing in embarrassing fashion). And you're right about Tatum. He should be our best player, by far. He's our most gifted player and, unfortunately, he oftentimes he chooses to be less than our best player. He TOOK THIRTY ONE SHOTS LAST NIGHT and made only 2 3-pointers. That type of performance makes him our 3rd best player.....last night that is. Tatum should NEVER be the Celtics 3rd best player, especially when JB is not in the lineup.

In two years, maybe not, but sga is peak now. Holmgren will be the best player though. Hopefully sga can stay quick a while so they will have a couple years peak together. I used to think sga would be traded but now how could you? I'll predict a home split this year

They played 2 weeks ago and MIL beat them by THIRTY TWO POINTS. Nobody is arguing where we are IN THE STANDINGS. But I look at things outside the record. I look at HOW WE PLAY THE GAMES and with what level of consistency. That is what will win championships. I believe, in order to win the championship, we must be dominant at home. That's been our downfall over the past few years in the playoffs. We have to have a mindset to bury teams at the Garden. Every series we've played the past two playoffs have seen us lose at home way too much and, as a result, extended playoff series when we should have handled business. We can win on the road. I just want dominance at home......not skating by with wins. Cause in the playoffs, there are no wins by skating by. I don't think a lot of teams care where we are. MIA was the 8 seed last year after winning the 2nd play-in game. Nobody cares about our win-loss record BUT US. It boils down to how we consistently play and, right now, despite our 24-6 record, we have a lot of room to grow. I just don't like to see that lack of growth displayed against a clearly inferior team like Detroit.

Also, oftentimes, shots don't fall. That's a part of the game. But when you stand around while your opponent dominates on the offensive boards and while you seemingly cannot defend drives to the basket, that's not falling for a "trap game".
That's mindset. Seemed our leader, Tatum, just wanted to stand outside and launch 3-pointers. We couldn't guard anybody, until the 3rd quarter. But then we stopped again in the 4th quarter.
At some point, we should have hit that switch to pull away and finish them.
I hope we hit that switch tonight.

There will be more just like it, we'll probably lose a few, but overall I like our chances! By the way, Miami scares me more than the Bucks or 6ers again this year!
