We have a Sox board here ... open for development to whoever wants to post. Sounds like Dee, Pud, Karp, Hedley, Elvis & you could kick things off with lots of good talk.
Thanks. Not sure I have enough knowledge to keep up with those guys...

That's what I was thinking. As soon as the C's are winners I too will put more attention to the Sox ... especially this summer if they keep winning. I'll try to get something up at least weekly to get things moving starting today.

Mazz is our coach because Ime couldn't keep it in his pants. Ime was Tatum and Brown's guy. Mazz wasn't. We didn't have time to do a thorough search for a HC and it made no sense to go out and get a veteran HC for one season after suspending Udoka for 1 year. That's why Mazz was immediately named "Interim". If you say you're suspending Udoka for 1 year, it doesn't make sense to sign a veteran coach long-term. Didn't make real sense to remove the "Interim" tag off Mazz either. My problem with the whole deal is that this team is uniquely suited for multiple title runs, NOW, and having a very inexperienced HC doesn't get us closer to that goal. Hes not very inexperienced anymore, now hes just inexperienced. Well, he's still very inexperienced. He's in the playoffs and he's making subtle quips to the media about his coaching style at the end of his presser? That's got to be the last thing he's focusing on after a 30-point blowout win. That's an emotional, rookie coach move right there. He will NEVER win that battle. It's legitimate to question the team shooting only 26 3-pointers when THAT'S WHAT WE DO. So, to turn around and launch more than 50 seems to be an obvious game two emphasis. Yet, coach wants someone to mention that......like that matters. He hasn't earned that courtesy yet. He's not Popovich or Spoelstra or Kerr. Not yet.

IDK if it is a good idea to go away from points in the paint. I realized in the first half if the first game we traded 2 for 3 a lot, but that half was an abberation, IMO. If you can get to the rim, you ought to.
That said, tonight I expect we're going to get slapped on a lot of drives with no calls, so we may want to make it a 3-pt contest.

Wasn't Ime a rookie coach last year?
Brad was a very good coach Danny left Brad took over He hired Ime, which everyone applauded He traded for White He traded for Brogdon. He had a choice between Stoudamire and Mazz
I trust him, he's usually made the right decision

Brad was a rookie to the NBA, Ime was in his first year........and Mazz has been an Assistant Coach since 2011. He was also a college head coach for two years before coming to Boston in 2019.

He was there for development of young players, and to develop himself in a low-pressure environment

If you can get to the rim, you ought to. That said, tonight I expect we're going to get slapped on a lot of drives with no calls, so we may want to make it a 3-pt contest. It depends a lot on how open the 3 is. Wide open is defined as closest defender being 6 (or more) feet away, with "open" (but not wide open) being closest defender 4-6 feet away. Heres the raw data for the wide open: www.nba.com/stats/players/shots-closest-defender-10?CloseDefDistRange=6+%20Feet%20-%20Wide%20Open&SeasonType=Regular%20Season&TeamID=1610612738&dir=D&sort=FG3ALets keep it focused on top 8: White, Brogdon, Smart, Tatum, Brown, Al, Rwill, Grant. Combined (wide open) - 1.25 pts / attempt When we change the filter from wide open to open - 1.125 pts / attempt. So we see an 11.1% drop off in pts / 3 pt shot when the player is merely open as opposed to wide open. When we go to slightly open or "tight" defined by closest defender being 2 - 4 ft away - the number falls all the way down to .85 pts per attempt Interesting when we look at 2pt shots with "tight" defense (closest defender 2-4) ft away, we get 1.16 pts / attempt. Now this includes all 2 pt fg attempts, but we're honestly not taking many of those covered (some, sure). But mostly this is your get to the basket category. Because its hard to finish at the rim with a defender more than 4 ft away (unless in transition). I also looked at the closest defender is 0-2 ft category for 2 pt'ers but theres much less volume there. So the closest defender being 2-4 ft away really seems to be the bulk of our 2s, and the bulk of those are at the rim. When we look at covered (closest defender less than 2 ft away)....from 3...Only JB averaged 0.1 covered 3's / game. Everyone else is 0.0. Conclusively: A *wide* open 3 is better than getting inside. Note - while I didnt crunch the numbers for a wide open 2 (which would be transition only) because you just cant run a play from half court and end at the rim with the closest defender that far away. We can assume that the pts/attempt for a wide open 2 is 2. 100% make (so 1)*2 (number of pts for the layin or dunk). So that would be an exception. So if you are one of those people who hates the pullup in transition when the lane and freebie basket is available - the numbers support you. Because the wide open 3pt pts/attempt is 1.25 which is significantly less than 2. So the just take the gimme crowd is probably right. Aside from that, a *wide* open 3 is better than any 2 (other than transition gimmes). The open (but not wide open) 3 is hard to gauge vs the 2. The get to the rim option isnt always there. And you'll have more turnovers trying to drive inside or even pass the ball inside for the look. The 2 pt shot does have a slightly better pts / attempt then the open (but not wide open 3) but its hard to account for the increased turnovers. Overall conclusion: When in transition, you should go for 2 if the lane is open. From the half court, its really more of a spectrum. The left goalpost being 0 ft open (not open), and the right goalpost being closest defender 6 ft (or more) away (so wide open)....The numbers show the better shot (3 vs 2) REALLY depends on where you are on that spectrum. It looks like if you can get a 3 pt shot with the closest defender being 5 or more feet away - thats the one you want. But youd rather attack the basket then go for the 3 if the defender is within 5 ft of the shooter.
Note2: the reason I chose 5 ft, was because the open (but not wide open) 3pt vs the 2 was close. And the open (but not wide open) 3 is defined as closest defender 4-6 ft away, so I split the difference.

For me, it doesn't matter which offensive approach we take. It won't matter one bit unless we play defense like we did in game two.
I like how Jaylen picked up Harden just past half court. He did not wait near the top of the key. I also like how Al did not easily switch and follow the screener to Harden. A lot of times, Smart went through the low screen and HE was the guy left switching onto Harden.
I believe Tatum MUST play big tonight. He's becoming as inconsistent as has Al these first two games.
If we get solid games from those two guys, and continue to get contributions from White, Smart, Brogdon, and Rob with Jaylen leading, I think we win both games in Philly.
We have yet to put together a 48 minute full team win in the playoffs. Everybody has to contribute and play their role and we'll be up 2-1 tonight.

My personal take on 3pt vs getting to the rim ...I always go back to the run vs pass football analogy.
when you are finding success passing the ball, the team will stack the secondary, opening up the run. WHen you are finding success running the ball, the team will stack the box, opening up the pass.
So mix it up, keep em guessing.
Because if you are finding success from 3, the inside game will prob open up. And if you are finding success from 2, the outside game will prob open up.

Yes, I hate when defenses try to defend when the guy already has a head of steam. This is why im not the biggest fan of true rim protectors and drop coverage. You stop the attack at pt of attack. If a talented driver, w finesse and body contortion ability is let to go right at the C, even Rudy G will have trouble. Pick em up early and play tight. Get in their space early. Tight on ball defense. Dont even give them open 3s when they are 2 ft away from the line. Todays NBA players will hit those. So be tight. Good point there.

Off Topic: I sense the media is shifting from Tatum to Brown for leadership. After 4 years they've finally realized that maybe Brown has better leadership skills than Tatum. What I hear/see on cable TV is lots of analyst types realizing that Brown & Brogdon may have taken hold of the defensive rope on their own due to a lack of leadership there from either Tatum or Mazz. Maybe they are just speculating but they've connected the dots and come to the conclusion that both JT & Mazz are more concerned with offense and the need for more defense has been overwhelming so JB & Brog set the example in Game #2.
As long as it continues, and all the better if others (including Tatum) join in and JT has a break out game as he usually does after a stinker ...

We should always try get to the rim on almost every possession, only to look for a pass to the 3 point area. There are no too much 3's for our style of play, but most of them should come from drive and kick opportunities. That's how we roll the best.
