4 takeaways as Tatum erupts for 51 points in Celtics 130-118 win over Hornets

The Celtics held off a late rally by the Hornets for their seventh straight win on Monday afternoon, using another dynamic Jayson Tatum outing (season-high 51 points) to pull off a 130-118 victory. Tatum led all scorers with his seventh 40-plus point performance of the year, scoring 18 of his 51 points in the fourth quarter in front of a Boston-friendly Charlotte crowd as the Hornets had no little chance of keeping him out of the paint or off the free throw line (14 FTAs) all day long. Boston led by as many as 18 points in the second half but the Hornets did not go down quietly after intermission thanks to a career-high 26 points from Jalen McDaniels. Boston managed to take back control late though to sweep the weekend set with Charlotte thanks to Tatum along with a nice bounce-back performance from Derrick White (17 points, 7 assists) after he missed most of Saturday’s win with a neck sprain. The Celtics have now won five straight road games overall amid their seven-game winning streak and extended their lead in the East to 4.5 games for the top seed in the Conference. The Celtics now get two days off before hosting the Warriors in a Finals rematch at TD Garden on Thursday night. Here are four takeaways from Monday’s win for Boston: Jayson Tatum puts on a show near collegiate home: The MVP chants came early and often for the former Duke star in a Celtics-friendly crowd at the Spectrum Center and they were deserved after his second straight road gem. The Hornets threw a mix of double teams and different defenders at the 6-foot-9 forward but Tatum got everything he wanted all game long as he picks apart a subpar Charlotte defense. He made 10 of his first 15 shots in the performance and posted 31 points by the midway point of the third quarter, helping Boston to keep their lead in double digits for nearly the entire second half. He also took command of the game in the fourth quarter with 18 points in the frame. Tatum has scored 30 or more points now in five of his last six games. Celtics offense reaches new levels of unselfishness: Boston’s firepower is at its best when this group is sharing the ball and they did that masterfully on Monday afternoon even without likely All-Star Jaylen Brown. Six different Celtics recorded three or more assists in the contest for Boston including backup big man Grant Williams who posted a career-high six assists in the first half alone in his homecoming to North Carolina. Through the first three quarters, the Celtics dished out assists on 29 of their first 32 field goals, showing shades of the offense we saw in the first month of the year that was originally on pace to be one of the best in NBA history. Celtics defense lets up after first quarter: The Celtics looked to be set for a blowout after opening up a big lead following a 10-0 run in the first quarter and limiting the hosts to just 28 percent shooting. However, the Hornets fought their way back from a 17-point deficit in the second half to make things interesting by feasting on a lack of ball pressure from the visitors. Charlotte only turned the ball over two times in the first three quarters lone, allowing them to climb back into the game behind some hot shooting from Jalen McDaniels and effort plays from Mason Plumlee who piled up five offensive rebounds. Some ill advised fouls from Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard on jump shots made things
Joe Mazzulla showed some lineup savvy to thwart Hornets comeback: The Hornets were building plenty of momentum against an all-bench Celtics lineup to start the fourth quarter, cutting Boston’s lead to three with nine minutes left in the game. Mazzulla made a key adjustments at this point, bringing back Tatum from his schedule rest a little bit early but also played a new-look lineup, going with three guards (Brogdon/Smart/White) to go with Tatum and Luke Kornet against a smaller Hornets group. The lineup helped Boston take back control of the game with a 6-0 run without disrupting the usual rest for Al Horford and Rob Williams.

at one time I thought the C's made the mistake of keeping SMart over Rozier. subsequently, I see Rozier doing more harm than good with his atrocious shot selection and selfish play. couple him in a back court with arguably the worst defender in the nba (Ball) and Charlotte has a ton of work to do.

Man that Hornets roster is poorly constructed. On one hand, you have Rozier and Ball who want to push pace and play up tempo. But then you have a few strictly half court guys. And they end up sucking at everything.

Rozier's fg% is like 41% which is eye popping because he's a runner so gets at least some transition yams which juice the fg%. Its like whats his pure shooting fg% (taking away the transition dunks/lay-ins) 30%. You simply dont need to guard him in half court, and thats a problem.

If Im coaching against the Hornets, Im okay with giving up wide open J's to Rozier from the stripe. And he's a guard lol.

There was a glaring stat pointed out By Scal. The Cs are 1-7 on two days off. They need to come out focused and set the tone early and often.
