Derrick White cracks the Miami Heat matchup
In the first half, White showed how crucial he is against a guard-heavy Miami Heat roster
By Daniel Poarch
Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports
Derrick White might just be the Celtics’ secret weapon against the Miami Heat.
A newfound member of the Celtics’ downsized starting lineup sans-Robert Williams III, White rocketed out of the gate tonight against Miami. He led the team with 10 points in the first quarter on a pair of three-pointers and a couple trips to the free throw line, paired with his typical defensive excellence on the other end of the floor. He played the first 11 minutes of the contest, delaying prized offseason and newly established sixth man Malcolm Brogdon’s entrance into the contest until the final minute of the first quarter as interim coach Joe Mazzulla rode the hot hand early on.
Watch him victimize Tyler Herro here to set up the fast break!
Here’s the thing about White against this Miami team: they play a lot of guards. Five in the first half tonight, in fact — Kyle Lowry, Tyler Herro, Gabe Vincent, Duncan Robinson and Max Strus — and that’s not even factoring in the injured Victor Oladipo, absent from tonight’s game. Few teams have the ability to stress a team’s guard depth quite like the Heat, with their hot-shooting backcourt rotation.
We already saw White’s value in this circumstance in last year’s postseason; he may not have scored well for much of the Eastern Conference Finals, but his versatility and tenacity on the defensive end of the court helped negative one of Miami’s greatest advantages in terms of roster construction. He may be the third guard on this roster by default, but as he’s already shown tonight, he has starter talent, and that’s a luxury that will pay dividends in this crucial Eastern Conference matchup.

Maybe.
Our real secret weapon Mazz is saving for real contenders like the Warriors.

Tatum and Brown are playing like they're virtually unstoppable.
However, we need a consistent 3rd scorer. Outside of the Jays, we have only 2 guys with just 10 points.
Sure would like to see who steps up if the Jays score only 20 each.

Well, game thread is obviously being compromised by the baseball playoffs...was clicking back and forth, but it is tough to find time in between to post here...
Both Celtics games thus far have been televised nationally against the Padres games...put both on DVR...but watched the Padres mostly by far...
Go Celtics!....

Damn. Almost done watching the replay and all I have to say is we are tough. We keep attacking like never seen. Williams have become a 3 threat, gallinaris absence has been a good thing for Hausers game. We are missing Rob. We have PP who hasnt played. We are stacked I believe. Brogdon is smart. Damn.

I guess Vonleh has beat out the ghost of Blake Griffin! Brogdon may not be the 3rd scorer I thought he was gonna be! Grant and Hauser combined may have to be our 3rd scorer! Brown and Tatum are gonna start seeing more double teams, because teams will take their chances letting Flop and White shoot! white had a good first quarter, didn't do much the rest of the game! Flop led the way with 5 turn overs! Overall great game!

It's early in the season and the Celts are looking good.
Thanks to what Danny started and what Brad continued to improve, we finally have a young team capable of winning multiple championships for years to come.

What's great about this current Celtics team is they can beat you with offense and they can beat you with defense.
Last season scoring droughts were a problem from time to time. Not so much this season.

I love the pace we are playing with right now.
We are good enough on defense.
We need to keep scoring.
Still early, but fun so far

Hi all, hope everyone is well. I took some time away after a personal tragedy. I continued to post on the Pats board sporadically but just now getting back into it. My takes on this group of Celtics:
- really like to know the whole story with Ime someday. - although young and not as experienced, Mazz might be a better fit with this group than Ime was. - Loved then and love now the Brogden deal. - PP ZERO minutes in first two games. - Big Al with 34 mins played last night. Team needs Time Lord back or one more "quality" big to save Al's legs for June. - How long can the J's keep up this pace? - I think Hauser will get better throughout the season as he gets Gallinari's playing time. - I confess, Vonleh has surprised me.
All in all, a good couple games, but its October not June. Don't want a reversal of last season! Again, I sincerely hope each of you have been well.

19 turnovers to 17 assist isn't great, but it's early and we still managed to win! I believe Vonleh will keep improving the more he plays, I'd give him some more of Al's minutes, 34 is a little much for Al this early in the season! If Brown keeps playing like this, he will be a top 10 player in the league!
