Warriors vs. Celtics: Lineups, broadcast info, injury reports for Feb. 2 By Justin Quinn
While it might not be the sort of epic showdown we have seen in seasons past between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics, the two teams are still almost evenly matched with Boston at 10 wins and 8 losses and Golden State at 11 victories to 9 lost games.
And though both teams would prefer to be doing better in the standings, they’ll have to win this contest to start building the moment they need to start climbing the standings again. The Dubs and the Celtics will be without key players, but don’t let the absences — or the late start time — let you think this is a contest to skip.

Injury reports
The Warriors will take the court with two key players out for the season — star wing Klay Thompson (ACL) and big man Marquese Chriss (leg) — with forward Alen Smailagic (knee) out for the contest as well.
Three players will also sit for the Celtics, though with a much shorter return in store of the trio than is the case with the Dubs.
Rookie guard Payton Pritchard (knee) and wing Romeo Langford (wrist) continue to work their way back to health, white veteran guard Marcus Smart (calf) misses his first of two to three weeks worth of contests.

Redick, Ball: These aren't the guards you're looking for, move along Justin Quinn
There’s a lot of buzz around a potential trade by the Boston Celtics for veteran New Orleans Pelicans guard JJ Redick, but the seasoned sharpshooter isn’t the sort of player the Celtics should be after — nor should Boston be focused on his younger teammate Lonzo Ball.
The theory goes that this could be the move to beat out the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers with perhaps some mediocre assets attached, but this is an error in thinking.
The TPE represents the Celtics’ biggest and most important asset to improve a team that will need to remain supple in how it can adapt in seasons well beyond this one, and dealing for an expiring contract is the exact opposite of what Boston needs to be considering.
There is at least a case for teammate Lonzo Ball given his Bird rights, but it would need confirmation of willingness to stay with the team, and even then he is not the sort of difference-make the Celtics should target with such a critical resource.
Neither play a position of particular need, and Redick — who is 36 years old and about as lethal this season as C-3PO was in Star Wars — might not warrant a minimum deal if he doesn’t fix what ails him.
Given age may be the issue and that the sands of time (or is that Tatooine?) yet to be defeated, it’d be negligent to use such an important tool on that player, and a poor bet on any who could walk without a very solid boost to the team’s title odds, which neither represent.

Boston Celtics draft-and-stash prospect Yam Madar continues to shine in the Israeli Basketball Premier League with the Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball club, where the future Celtic floor general got into a mano-a-mano duel with former University of Florida (and current Maccabi Tel Aviv) standout Scottie Wilbekin.
While Wilbekin and Maccabi took the contest with the former Gator logging 23 points and hitting 5-of-9 3-point attempts, it wasn’t without quite the fight from Madar. He put up 22 points and 6 rebounds on a sizzling 9-of-13 shooting, looking every bit the future NBA point guard Boston drafted the Beit Dagan native for 47th overall in the 2020 draft.

4 players Cs could bring in to improve frontcourt by Mark Nilon
The Boston Celtics could use for some roster bolstering, specifically upfront
One of the greatest weaknesses for the C’s rotation resides within their frontcourt.
Lacking a legitimate interior presence to help clog the lane on defense at the five, Boston may be in the market to add another big man to attempt to help better their chances at attaining banner No. 18.
Today, the Houdini presents to you four players the Celtics could bring in to help bolster their frontcourt:
Boston Celtics frontcourt option No. 1) Robin Lopez
We’ve been peddling the idea of Robin Lopez coming to the Boston Celtics for well over a year now and, though it’s been a while, the same reasons as to why we believe this pairing to be a good idea still apply today.
While he may not have the highest ceiling in comparison to other potential targets, at the end of the day he is a seasoned veteran who has made a name for himself as a solid defender and an all-out hustle guy.
Through 16 games played, Lopez is posting solid averages of 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds on a career-high 64 percent shooting from deep.
At a legitimate seven-foot frame, the 32-year-old could come in and be an intimidating presence down low who can swat shots and grab rebounds (16.6 defensive rebound percentage) while also being an active screen setter for the likes of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kemba Walker.
Boston Celtics frontcourt option No. 2) Nerlens Noel
Though some may consider Nerlens Noel to be a relative bust in regard to him being selected sixth overall in the 2016 NBA draft, throughout his seven-year tenure the center has managed to make himself into a quality low-post presence on offense in terms of lobs and gobbling boards while also serving as an enforcer on the defensive side of the ball.
Boasting career averages of 7.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game on 54 percent shooting from the field, the 26-year-old currently finds himself logging minutes with the New York Knicks on a one-year, $5 million contract.
In 16.8 minutes a night, the veteran big is proving himself unbelievably productive, as he’s posting a career-high blocks-percentage of 9.4 (to put this into perspective, Rudy Gobert is at 7.2) and a defensive box plus-minus of 3.7, both of which are team highs for players who’ve logged more than 200 minutes on the season.
Certainly not the sexiest of names, but the Boston Celtics don’t necessarily need one of those to get better.
A legitimate defensive enforcer could do the trick, and at this price range a team could do a lot worse than a player like Noel.
Boston Celtics frontcourt option No. 3) Hassan Whiteside
Now we start venturing into some of the more polarizing bigs that could end up being available at some point this season in veteran center Hassan Whiteside.
Despite posting stellar numbers during the 2019-20 season with the Portland Trail Blazers whilst filling in for the injured Jusuf Nurkic (15.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, a league-leading 2.9 blocks), the 31-year-old ultimately was not a highly sought after free agent this past offseason and eventually settled for the veteran’s minimum with the Sacramento Kings.
It is our belief that the Boston Celtics should have been the ones to have inked him to such a deal but, hey, you can’t undo the past.
That said, you can alter the future by being active in the present, and we would suggest that Danny Ainge should inquire about the availability of the big man.
Barely being utilized (14.1 points) as he is trapped behind young talent Marvin Bagley in the rotation, the descending Kings have absolutely no use for Whiteside as they once again seem bound for a lottery finish.
The Celtics, on the other hand, could easily benefit from his career 13.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.4 blocks self coming off the pine or, perhaps, even in a starting role.
In order for Boston to get past the likes of the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs, they’ll need to bring on a player who can combat the firepower a Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo will bring to the court.
Hassan Whiteside could be that guy on the defensive side of the ball.
Boston Celtics frontcourt option No. 4) JaVale McGee
Last but certainly not least we have the 13-year-veteran, JaVale McGee.
After winning his third championship in four seasons — two with the Golden State Warriors, one with the Los Angeles Lakers — the center was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers this past November.
In a reserve role, the seven-footer is having himself quite an efficient campaign, posting averages of 8.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and a surprising 31 percent shooting from deep (albeit on just 13 total attempts).
Though he is playing at such a rate, the likelihood of McGee being moved this reason is rather high, as the oddly constructed Cavs have an absolute logjam upfront with Andre Drummond, Kevin Love, Jarrett Allen, and Larry Nance Jr. all vying for minutes.
Due to his cost-efficient deal (expiring deal with $4.2 million left), he would certainly be the easiest of the bunch to be moved.
Frankly, there are two main reasons we at the Houdini can see the Boston Celtics pursuing the 33-year-old this season either via trade or buyout:
Because they could seriously use for some added talent and size to their frontcourt To prevent the Brooklyn Nets from getting him, who are reportedly high on the prospect of bringing him on to bolster their own problematic big man rotation
All things considered, acquiring McGee could help the shamrocks in more ways than just bolstering their frontcourt — though, of course, that’s where he’d be most important.

Payton Pritchard injury: Boston Celtics rookie could return Wednesday vs. Sacramento Kings (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)AP By Matt Vautour |
Brad Stevens said rookie Payton Pritchard could be back in the Celtics rotation as soon as Wednesday’s 10 p.m. game against the Sacramento Kings as the rookie guard is ahead of schedule coming back from a knee injury.
Stevens said Pritchard would be day to day beginning Wednesday.
“Once he’s available, he’ll obviously be part of the rotation. It’s just a matter of when he’s cleared,” Stevens said. “He’ll be day-to-day after today. I do not know if he’ll play tomorrow or not. I don’t think it’s out of the question. I’ll learn more on the bus ride to Sacramento after the game.”
Any Pritchard minutes would be welcomed by the Celtics, who’ll be missing both Marcus Smart and Kemba Walker, for Wednesday’s game. Smart is out for 2-3 weeks after suffering a Grade 1 tear or his calf Saturday. Walker is not playing in back to back games during the regular season. The Celtics are being careful with him as he builds back from a knee injury.
Pritchard had to be helped off the court after suffering a sprained right knee in the first quarter of the Celtics’ Jan. 22 loss to the Sixers, just two minutes after checking into the game. After leaping for a defensive rebound, Jaylen Brown landed on Pritchard’s foot, forcing the guard’s knee to bend awkwardly.
Pritchard immediately grabbed his knee and appeared to be in significant pain as he sat on the court. After several moments, he was helped off the court by two Celtics’ staffers. He appeared to be putting weight on his right leg, but did so gingerly as he went directly to the locker room.
He admitted afterward that he felt something pop causing him to fear the worst. Instead, he was diagnosed with a sprained MCL, which puts rehab at weeks instead of months.
“They said it can feel like it popped. That was my first ever knee injury. Obviously, when I got hit, then feeling like it popped, then the pain, you go to the worst (thoughts). My mind was like ‘I’m done. I’m done for however long,” Pritchard said last week. “You start to, not necessarily panic, but that was the first time it happened to me. It ended up just being an MCL sprain which obviously I should be able to come back from pretty quickly.”
Pritchard’s strong start had pushed the first-round pick out of Oregon past veteran free-agent signee Jeff Teague as the team’s first guard off the bench.
He is averaging 7.7 points and 2.6 assists in 20.9 minutes.
