He's got a little Bill Russell in him ... tipping the rebound to himself

NBA Comparison: Stromile Swift
Strengths: Possesses really nice combination of size and athleticism ... His huge (near 7'6) wingspan allows him to block shots and play bigger than his 6'9 height ... 240 pound frame prevents him from being bullied around the rim ... Moves very well for his size, both with and without the ball ... Does a good job of anticipating where missed shots will go and is very good and getting position inside ... Rebounds the ball high in the air, doesn’t just let the ball come to him ... High rebounding rate on both ends of the court (12% offensive rebound rate, 23.7 defensive rebound rate for his career) ... Rebounds with two hands and grabs boards both inside and outside of his area ... High level shot blocker, uses anticipation, length and vertical to deny shots near the rim ... Has worked to develop an offensive repertoire both facing up and on the low block ... Can use his explosive leaping ability to finish strong around the rim and has the strength to power through contact ... Wants to play a physical brand of basketball which allows him to not only get to the free throw line, but also cause foul trouble for opponents ... Not a black hole in the post, is willing to pass it back out and repost ... Should be able to add muscle to his frame still ... Doesn’t find himself in foul trouble often ... Progressed from lower ranked prospect to a possible lottery pick ...
Weaknesses: Has a tendency to leave you wanting more. Disappears for stretches of games, particularly offensively ... Competitive level has been questioned by some ... Doesn’t always seem in control on the court, opponents can speed him up and make him uncomfortable ... Has been working to extend his range, but still lacks any consistency with his jump shot ... Very poor free throw shooter who needs work on his shot mechanics ... Sometimes relies too much on his athleticism ... Still a raw prospect who, despite making a big leap in development his freshman year, didn’t progress nearly as much as a sophomore ... Can become complacent when the offense is flowing through teammates ... Inconsistent performer, especially as a scorer ... Can struggle to make major offensive impact when he doesn’t have the physical advantage over his competition ... Has a habit of posting in space instead of fighting his opponent for position ... Some of his deficiencies have been covered up by playing in Texas A&M’s frontcourt (along with Tyler Davis) where teams can’t double Williams ... Sometimes can find himself out of position defensively, this can likely be remedied with more experience, however ... Was suspended to start sophomore season, raising some red flags ...
Outlook: Williams projects as an athletic, energy guy inside that uses his athleticism to overwhelm less physically gifted players. He still has a lot of development to become a high caliber player at the next level, but if he can expand his game beyond exploiting his physical advantages, he could become a difference maker for a team.

Stromile Swift? Do people really remember his game? I barely remember him. Surely they could find a more famous reference.

If the biggest knock against him is that he disappears at times, then I am not worried. Brad will sit him down immediately until he is ready to go back in. This is not college ball where there is huge dependence upon these players and there are no viable alternatives.
I just don't want him to be Andrew Bynum.

When he slipped past #14-17 Ainge said he tried to move up to get him but was unable to find a trade.
Danny got lucky as Williams fell from #14-17 area all the way down to us at #27.
Note: As previously noted as a "Fun Fact," Lakers got lucky with our original pick #27 last year getting Kuzma and indeed the C's got lucky this year with the same pick ... we got MOAR than we hoped for at #27.

Something weird happened to my screen on the last name, couldn't quite make it out (kidding of course). Capela's a pretty decent player. He's got upside if they can tap into it, hard not to like this pick now.

Very hard to find something at #27. Completely expected a guard who would sit on our bench for 2 years and then be out. What a surprise! An athletic defensive big, who can rebound and dunk! I agree that Stevens will right the ship re: attitude. Will be a solid rebounder/defensive big man immediately, and could even grow. I thought he was going to go between picks 16 - 18!

Dunno how you teach motor/attitude.
You either have it.... or you don't have it!!!

I feel like we got a lottery pick, at 27!! If someone had told me before the draft that we would get Williams, I would have thought we had traded up to get him!!

I'm not as high on him as I was on Bamba & Jackson but being the next best big after those two (and Carter) is encouraging. He is as athletic as Jordan, has the size of Johnson (small but savy) and can be as good or better than Capela in a few years IMO ... we'll need to see him in the summer & pre-season games to confirm the optimism.

From The Ringer: Loser: Robert Williams; Winner: Robert Williams Uggetti: The rare loser-winner scenario! Robert Williams out of Texas A&M was considered a lottery talent. At one point this season, he said he was looking to be the no. 1 overall pick. And with good reason: Williams was ranked 12th in the ESPN draft rankings, and as an athletic big man, has high potential to be a rim-running center, seemingly a perfect fit for the modern NBA. Yet there were concerns about Williams’s motor, how much he relied on the talent around him, and whether he was refined enough to merit such a high selection. Teams cooled on him, but it was still a surprise to see him keep dropping all the way down to the late first round. At 27, the Celtics took the plunge and selected Williams, and Boston is quite literally the best possible situation for him to land in. It’s a disappointing drop for Williams, given what his draft ceiling could have been, but in Boston, he’ll get plugged into a system that’s proved to maximize talent and excise motivational problems. Brad Stevens will be a godsend for Williams, and if Williams ever reaches his full potential, he’ll be the athletic big the Celtics have been looking for. The path to the selection may have been disheartening for Williams, but in the end, the result is all that may matter.

Am curious why we as fans always say what a draftee can't do instead of what he is really good at. The only thing that I have watched, seen and heard that is damn curious is his free throw percentage.., he not coming to shoot 3's. Celts have lots of them... He is coming to rebound .. Play D... And block shots... Reportedly that's what he does really well... Celts have no one that does that currently I just wonder why his FT's weren't addressed at the college level.. Am pretty sure he will be spending a lot of time at the line shooting.. At pick 27 and not seeing into the future, he looks like he could be a steal...

A+ on the draft again, Danny. Capela? Jordan? Haven't we been saying that's who we need for years now? I still want to re-sign Baynes, but this is a great pick. ALL the analysts, CBS, and hoopshype agree. He or Porter could be the steal of the draft.
Well done, best GM in the league!!

Horford will get him to bust his ass, and that is the knock on him. We got another C a few years ago who was labeled as lazy.............00 now sits high above courtside!!

Jackie M isn't a great fan of it. We all know the kid has some effort skeletons in his closet. He still has ability and if being on a championship contending team can't motivate him he'll either be out or to learn love playing in Turkey.

So did good things happen for the Celts? Yes, they drafted Robert Williams and he has good potential.
Did the Kings find a contributor? Probably but will he move the needle? Most likely, the Kings pick will be a high lottery pick next year.
Will Memphis compete to get into playoffs next year? Will the Memphis pick convey? Looks like they found a good player to add to their mix. Conley comes back and Gasol gets engaged. Are they good enough to make the playoffs?
Will the Clips make the playoffs? They almost did this year.
Over all, I think that the value of Celts draft picks stash went up marginally. Thoughts?

I do not know the comparative quality of next year's draft in general. but I do know that the top guys listed are for the most part not big men. This is the year I think we might have leveraged some of those future choices to get a top big man, so without knowing obviously what the attempted deals were, I am disappointed. I hope our number 27 guy works out, but after hearing his initial phone call, and seeing how many teams passed on him I am not overly impressed, but will reserve judgment for now.
