washingtonpost.com The officials weren’t wrong as the Chiefs raged, but does anyone want this?Sally Jenkins
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Buffalo Bills have been the most luckless, heartbreak-prone good team in the NFL. But the Kansas City Chiefs have surpassed them as victims of the fussiest, pettiest, most paltry and joy-curdling penalty you ever saw. A shoe size was the margin that the Chiefs lost to the Bills by Sunday, on a bureaucratic offside call that negated so much splendid fun. There was classic written all over this meeting until that stingy moment. It was a high-stakes confrontation with postseason implications featuring the league’s most magnetic quarterbacks, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, both of them tougher than field stubble. It was all ready to be posterized at Arrowhead Stadium, where the fervent crowd lurched upward in its imperium red against the big sky, when tight end Travis Kelce caught that 25-yard fling from Mahomes and, with an audacity that grabbed the breath right out of your throat, threw a zip-line of a lateral across the field to wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who danced into the end zone. “A legendary moment, man,” Mahomes said. And then all the classic-ness was leached out of the picture with that yellow flag. It didn’t just deprive the Chiefs of an all-time great play but inevitably took your admiring eye off the Bills and that slithering Allen, too, in their restorative 20-17 victory. Stop the replay. Yes, there is Toney’s shoe, and he’s leaning forward into the neutral zone. It was such a mindless mistake. As even Mahomes admitted, you’re taught how to line up in “elementary school.” But there was fault, too, in the apparatchik who threw that swath of yellow. Toney’s transgression couldn’t have affected the play — or any play — in the slightest. When is the last time you saw somebody call offensive offside? It almost never happens because, generally and quite reasonably, good officials issue a caution. “Very embarrassing to the NFL for it to take place,” Chiefs Coach Andy Reid called it. “Normally if it’s even close, you get a warning. I’ve been in the league a long time and haven’t had one like that.” And so instead of a classic, it all turned surly. The red crowd lingered in the bottom ring of Arrowhead booing until it sounded like a collective moan, and on the sideline Mahomes rampaged, screaming toward the officials so furiously that it took four men to hold him back. And Monday morning, all anyone will be doing is arguing over whether the call was righteous or a needless piece of hairsplitting and more evidence of the over-officiousness and yet inconsistency of NFL officiating, which has become so complicated that you practically need a Latin concordance to interpret it. “It’s tough to swallow,” Mahomes said. “… To take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that — you want to see the guys on the field decide the game. They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something. ... You make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we’re talking about the refs. It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football.” Maybe the Chiefs wouldn’t have fumed about the officiating so much if it hadn’t been the second week in a row that they suffered a loss after a game-altering call. Last week, it was a no-call on Green Bay Packers cornerback Carrington Valentine, despite his mauling of wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling, that cost them in a 27-19 defeat. And some of the Chiefs’ postgame soreheadedness was sour grapes, of course — and maybe a little bit of panic, having lost four of their past six to fall to 8-5. It’s the time of year when some teams flex and some teams fold. The Chiefs have been hanging on to their accustomed dominance with their fingernails, and you can almost hear the titch, titch of them slipping. Home-field advantage in the playoffs is by no means sure, with Baltimore and Miami looming over them and vying for the AFC’s top seed. There is a catch in their usually smooth offensive execution, and it isn’t just that they are missing running back Isiah Pacheco, who usually acts as their shoulder through the end zone door. They were the NFL’s top offense in 2022, but coming into this game they ranked 11th in points. While that might be enviable for some teams, they’re used to more. This was an inflection game for both teams. There was the distinct feeling that a win or a loss could bend their season one way or the other. “I think if we can start this week with a great week of practice and try to beat a really good football team … it’s kind of like, next week, we’ll be talking about how great we are,” Mahomes said last week. The only problem was that the same was true of the Bills, who as the entire league warily knows are far, far better than their 7-6 record. Coming into Arrowhead, they had outscored their opponents by 101 points and all six of their losses were by six points or fewer, including two in overtime. It was as if they kept “stubbing our toe,” as Coach Sean McDermott said. “Our record says one thing; who we are as a team is another,” wide receiver Stefon Diggs said last week. “… I don’t think too many teams or people in the league won’t say we’re a good team.” But this time the toe-stubbing was done by the Chiefs, in collaboration with the officials. Kelce’s inspired play could have been immortal. For the sheer pleasure of it, let’s relive Kelce’s moment one more time before it lapses into obscurity. The former high school quarterback dodged and staggered over two tacklers, then suddenly turned and threw an improvisational rope across the field to hit Toney in the chest and crack open the 49-yard scoring play. Then the interjection of the flag. The problem with such a call is that it interrupts what ought to be a straightforward narrative. Stay out of the way, you want to howl toward the field. However severely you may judge Toney’s silly mistake, see whether you don’t feel a rising irritation at referee Carl Cheffers’s explanation of the call: “It’s one of those things we don’t want to be overly technical on, but when in his alignment he’s lined up over the ball, that’s something we are going to call as offensive offsides.” According to Cheffers, “no warning was required.” Well, no. Not required. But it was the fair and sensible thing to do. And isn’t that what an official is ultimately supposed to be? There was of course no guarantee that even if the Mahomes-Kelce-Toney touchdown had stood, Allen wasn’t going to bite back, with slightly more than a minute remaining. All game long, he was stag-legged as he staked the Bills to leads of 14-0 and 17-7. “I’m not guaranteeing we win this game with Josh on the other side,” Mahomes acknowledged. But we’ll never know, will we? That’s the problem with making such a punctilious call. “You may have taken a moment away from him as well,” Mahomes pointed out.
********88888888888**********888888888888************8888888888*********
Turns out that the utterly selfless Mahomes is concerned that a moment of glory may have been taken away from Josh Allen too.
Memo to PatrickM: Josh will get over it.... trust me on this, amigo!

I watched and thought to myself, this is what has happened to the Patriots all season. Some self-infliction and some pettiness from the refs possibly a result of our poor record but the same can't be said of the Chiefs so it has to come back to officiating in general. I felt good for an instance that this stuff wasn't just happening to the Patriots!

And so it must be happening to my woeful 4-9 'skins too then!!!
NOT!!!!
It's really easy to blame the refs.
But the better teams seem able to rise above all-too-human officiating.
If we have AI robots making the calls instead of 2 legged mammals, someone will then complain that the computer software surely has been hacked against their particular team.
Human nature..... go figure!

The Chiefs have risen above it 8 times out of 13 tries in 2023 which puts them in the running for a PO spot.
Life is good for the Chiefs!
They are definitely a "better team" than most..... including my 4-9 'skins or your 3-10 Pats!

The idiot lined up PAST the ball ( not just in the Neutral zone)/ the refs were CORRECT, not sure what the fuss was all about. The fuss is all about Taylor Swift's bf and how his great play had to be called back.
Talyor became very, very upset with the call.... and she is a huge fan now of the Chiefs..... but didn't use to be.
She is now.
And her followers (called Swifties) now watch NFL games, some for the very first time, but only when her bf plays.
Taylor is a pop singer with star power and gazillions of loyal followers that the NFL and its sponsors would love...
... to target with merch, made cheaply in far away lands but which sell for top dollar.
That's the fuss in a nutshell.... how to have a winning NFL experience that can appeal to youthful purchasers of pricey NFL and NFL sponsored product! Any other questions, kdp?

washingtonpost.com Patrick Mahomes regrets outburst, calls it ‘not a great example for kids’ Cindy Boren
A day after his furious outburst over an offsides penalty that nullified what would have been the go-ahead touchdown, Patrick Mahomes had a cooler perspective about how he handled the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss and treated Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
“It happens, man. It’s the NFL,” Mahomes said on 610 Sports Radio. “Stuff like that happens. You’ve got to move on. … Obviously, you don’t want to react that way. I care, man. I love it. I love this game, I love my teammates, I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win. But obviously, can’t do that. Can’t be that way toward officials or really anybody in life.”
The play that ignited his fury toward officials and, indirectly, toward Allen was a lateral TD pass from tight end Travis Kelce to Kadarius Toney, who was flagged for having his foot over the line of scrimmage before the ball was snapped with less than two minutes left. The Chiefs went on to turn the ball over on downs and Mahomes slammed his helmet to the ground, shouting and being restrained by teammates as he came to the sideline.
Allen took some collateral damage, absorbing an expletive-laden earful as the two met on the field for a quick postgame handshake. “Wildest f------ call I’ve ever seen,” Mahomes told Allen in clips shared on social media. “Offensive offsides on that play, man, f------ terrible.”
“Probably regret acting like that,” Mahomes said Monday, “but more than anything, I regret the way I acted toward Josh after the game because he had nothing to do with it. I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that, man. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. I was more upset about that than I was about me on the sideline.”
The Chiefs lost for the third time in their last four games, falling to 8-5 and third place in the battle for the AFC’s home-field advantage in the playoffs. The team’s 13-game start is the worst since the 28-year-old Mahomes became the starting quarterback in 2018 and its high-powered offense is uncharacteristically sputtering, with receivers’ league-leading 32 dropped passes contributing to the frustration.
“It’s tough when you play a hard-fought game and the game comes down to stuff like that,” Mahomes said Monday. “But it’s part of it, man. It’s part of the game. You’ve got to just learn from it and try to be better from it, be better as a person and be better as a player. It’s something that I’ll learn from in my career and try to be better the next time the situation arises.”
Immediately after the Bills’ 20-17 win, Mahomes lamented that a “legendary” play by Kelce went for naught even as he admitted players are taught how to line up in “elementary school.”
“Another game we’re talking about the refs,” he said Sunday. “It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football. Let us play the game. Then whatever happens happens.”
Coach Andy Reid called the penalty an “embarrassment” Sunday, then admitted Monday that Toney was offsides. However, he pointed out that officials usually warn coaches before throwing a flag for those types of violations.
“You see it on both sides [of the ball],” Reid told reporters Monday. “Whether it’s a defensive end lining up in the neutral zone sometimes or that. You just give the head coach a heads up and, in our case, we tell ’em. And then if they get called — listen, you were warned. That’s how it’s worked over the years and that’s what I was really trying to get across.”
Reid also defended Mahomes’s outburst Monday.
“We put so much time and effort into it and both physical and mental effort,'' Reid said. “For it to come down to something like that, that ends up being the frustration. … That type of situation is too great for really good football teams playing each other and you’re down to a minute and a half or a minute, 50 seconds, all of a sudden, you’re right there and have a big play. I think anybody would say that’s a little bit frustrating.
“Do we need to line up right? Yeah, we do. We’ve got to take care of that and not put it in the officials’ hands.''
Referee Carl Cheffers said Sunday that the down judge saw Toney’s “alignment was over the ball and that’s what he ruled on the field.” And, he added, if a coach or receiver looks for alignment advice, officials will give it to them, but “ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up.”
He went on to say that “no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball. So we would give them some sort of warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond warning.”

For fans of this guy (Petey among them): PJ Tucker, and his 11 million dollar salary, is VERY unhappy with his role on the Clips............discuss! How are we going to send out 11 mil? We can't make any real trades He'll have to be bought out our TPE only is about 6 mil as i understand it. PP could be traded but he's at only 4 +mil. Stevens has few choices and besides Tucker Kelly O for the Jazz is probably available but he at 11 mil also I think were locked it to what we have maybe Walsh progresses enough to fill in for Zinger or Horford.. We fucked up not signing Theis but i think he had seen enough of Boston and really didn't want to come back..

We all seen what we looked like without Zinger Not good. He'll probably make it thu if Mazz and Stevens rest him from time to time. Is Horford going to have legs in March? 50/50. Kornet can't play against the big bigs only looks good against guys 6'8'' or less
