Preview: Boston visits a Dame-less Blazers fighting for the 8th seed By Justin Quinn
The 39-17 Boston Celtics travel to Portland, Oregon to face off with the Trail Blazers Tuesday evening as the Blazers fight for a playoff spot over the 2019-20 season’s final stretch. Boston looks to shake off the sour taste of a close loss to their longtime rival Los Angeles Lakers over the weekend, but have won eight of their last ten games compared to Portland’s five over the same stretch. Both clubs will have significant injury concerns heading into the contest, with the Celtics down All-Star point guard Kemba Walker (knee) and center Robert Williams III (hip). Williams is nearing a return from an injury dating back to early December 2019, perhaps as soon as March 1.
Two way center Tacko Fall may also be unavailable after exiting a Maine Red Claws game early with an undisclosed injury Saturday.
The Blazers are especially beset with injury, and will be without All-NBA point guard Damian Lillard (groin) and forward Zach Collins (shoulder) among the recently-waylaid.
Small forward Rodney Hood (Achilles) and Jusuf Nurkic (leg/calf) continue to rehab from serious injury.
While both teams at full health would be a much more competitive meeting, with so many important players missing from Portland’s rotation, the Celtics should be able to pull off the road win even without Walker available.
Most online bookmakers tend to agree, with an average spread of +5.5 being given to the Blazers.

Key Matchups
Marcus Smart vs CJ McCollum McCollum has had to pick up his game with Lillard missing time with the groin strain. He is averaging 21.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. He is shooting 45.4% from the field and 38.7% from beyond the arc. McCollum is coming off a 41 point game against the Pistons and so the Celtics need to defend him closely to keep him from going off in this game.
Jayson Tatum vs Carmelo Anthony Carmelo Anthony has been a good addition for the Blazers. He is averaging 15.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He is shooting 41.9% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc. Jayson is coming off a career game against the Lakers and hopefully will pick up where he left off in that game.
Honorable Mention
Daniel Theis vs Hassan Whiteside Whiteside is averaging 15.8 points, 14.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 3.1 blocks per game. He is shooting 61% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc. He has only shot 4 threes so far this season and made 2 of them. It will be important to keep him off the boards and out of the paint as much as possible.

Sloppy offense leads to an 8-0 run by POR ... Brown makes a transition three and Tatum follows that up with his own transition dunk and the C's are up 10 with 2 mins to the half!

Whiteside stuffs JB but he takes another deep one as the clock is running out and Gordo slips in, collects the RBD for the putback.
JT stuffs Carmello but JB is stripped on his move to the rim.
Smart misses a bunny and the half ends 56-48 Celtics.

Wanamaker leads the bench scoring (10pts) with 5 of his own.
Brown 15 Tatum 10 Smart 9 Hayward 8
Gordo has 3 TOs and Tatum 2 ...
Both Smart & Brown are 3-6 on threes.
